Forum activity low

Had Brian posted a flight of his Genesis, he would have been swamped with commentary.

Whatever the economy or the mental state of the participants.

i believe we are in a down cycle now in everything. most of the forums are filled with guests who cant post. lots of lookers, less activity. thats life. hang on, i think we are in for some tough times. posting in the forums will be the least of ower worries.

Mike I'll claim that post and only reply to you in explanation. Not defense or excuse. It's not "typical" of me to reply like that. I posted that after you took the effort to trash a gyroplane model in a thread that was started in good taste to put out some positive info. So if anything was "typical", it was perceived muck raking. I want courtesy just as much as you do. While we are quoting cliches, You give a little, you get a little. Hope you don't think any less of me just because I was wanting you to not take that thread in a completely different direction. "moderation" if you will.

Brian, it is less and less newbies, and alot of the oldie are loosing interest or just simply spending less time on the forum.

I used to read each and every new post made on this forum for years, would comment back on most of them ( hence the # of posts I have here ) it took a toll on my life, I spent more time on this forum than I did with my wife or kids.... I just don't have the interest like I did and spend very little time here. I scan through " new posts " and if something catches my eye I will open it and read what has been posted. I am sure alot of forum members are in the same boat.

The fighting and bickering has been going on for the last 10+ years, it isn't anything new. It is not the problem

This forum is flying behind the power curve with posts!

Sorry, I couldn't resist!

I've followed this list for about a year before starting my gyro training and choosing which one I would buy. I'm still logging each day to look for pertinent new data and share my experiences as e newby.

Sure, sometimes the signal to noise ratio deteriorate but hey, do you know a single forum with as many members that don't?

I have hard times finding some old posts that I'e read long ago. As an example, I cannot find anymore the thread were people send pictures to put a face on their name... As I get accustomed to regular members of that list, I feel the need to go back there from time to time...

I like posting videos and pictures when I can. When I first started looking at gyros I came here and also watched YouTube. There has never been that much video on what I fly so I have been determined to get some up close and personal shots in there. Most of the videos that were out there when I started were take offs and landings from a distance...not very exciting. It would be great for others to do a walk around of their gyro, talking about its features, pros and cons, and some startup/shutdown stuff. This is what newbies want to see. There are countless threads that are started by new guys to the effect of: what's better? what's this look like? help me compare this and that. Would be nice to point to a stickied thread in the future that was video walk arounds of different machines. Dominators, Genesis (woot!), RAF, SportCopters, the European models, etc. Some of the video out there needs updating anyway now that HD video is out.

I'll continue to post videos. I have a great time doing it because it. Ya'll are right. The post counts ARE the comments. I never thought of it like that. But I come here for friendship as well. So comments are nevertheless nice to see from time to time. Either way, I'll look at it differently now.

Some ideas I have for future videos are:
Genesis walk around (current state of build) - I haven't done this yet because a frame is a frame. I'm wanting to wait until I get the panel going, engine ready to mount, and putting the controls together. So stay tuned.

A more informative walk around of the RAF.
An explanation of how to break down and reassemble an RAF for transporting.
Flying in gusty conditions dual and solo.

You guys have a great week. Thanks for the comments.

I stop by at least 3 to 4 times during the day at work, once I get home I check in also. I don't post as much as I used to. I have added a link to the forum on my website along with my builders log to give people out there something to look through and to help others here see how I built some of my parts what information I have found up on the internet that pertains to rotorheads, H/S and V/S . I have gotten a few comments from Russia and South America thanking me for posting it. I still working on some of it.

Like a lot it has been hot, went flying 3 weeks ago and when I was finished and loading everything up since I don't have a hanger so I have take the blades off and trailer everything home. It wears you out.

It is still a great forum, there is a mass of information in here - it can be a little hard to find, but there is always someone to help out, either answering the query or pointing you in the right direction.

My impression is it has not slowed down much, perhaps everyone is a little more educated by now, the mis-information is largely separated from the real information, and a lot of specialist knowledge is becomeing a little more 'general knowledge'.

(and think how hard it was to find such information before this forum was created).

I'll click on the new posts about every day, the quantity hasn't changed much.

For what it is worth, I think Mike's post on the thread in question was justified, those are pretty business-like and attractive looking machines, and while they may deserve their current success, it is probably a good thing that newcomers go in there with their eyes wide open.

In the end though, it seemed to work out well, the reins got tugged the correct amount and perhaps that thread ended with just about the right amount of kudos vs cautionary comment. It would have not achieved much if it had continued into a slanging match.:)

I love the forum!

I love the forum!

I love the forum for all the information I can find here.

I recently asked some very specific questions about IMC and received some wonderful informed clear answers.

I love the forum for the opportunity it provides, I get to share the fun with people I have never met that seem like friends to me. I don’t know how people can respond to that sort of post other than to share common experiences. There have been many nice comments but I post so often it is not reasonable to expect people will continue to repeat themselves. When I post about even a simple flight there will probably be 200 people that see it. I don’t know 200 people around here that are interested in aviation.

I find the process of posting helps me to focus and is good practice for the book we hope to write.

I love the forum for all my friends here, some I have never met and most I see rarely.

When I attend events I find people have read my posts that have never responded and most of the feedback is positive.

I may be very insensitive and I know I have a poor memory because I don’t recall being flamed over anything I have posted. Sometimes there is a divergence of opinion but I don’t recall something I would perceive as a personal attack.

I would like more feedback on my Building Mariah Gale thread but it is so out of the mainstream that it is no wonder that there are not more suggestions. I would post more about it but it moves very slowly and sometimes backward. I feel it is a better aircraft for my participation here.

Sometimes I am not able to communicate a concept well and people get stuck on imagining something completely unrelated with unrelated pros and cons. It helps me to learn about communication.

I don’t do videos because they take a lot of editing to manage the slow bits. Ed wants to get into it but I don’t like to do things half way. I want to stay focused on the book and learning to write.

I seldom log in here without finding something of benefit. I usually don’t post about it because I don’t feel like I have much to offer and it seems to me I post too much anyway.

It appears that I have a divergent opinion about the health and value of the forum.

Thank you, Vance

Your opinion is not so different than mine Vance. I just felt more compelled to write about the lack if other videos and lack of response of those that have been posted since I am one of the few that take this extra time. I share your same value of the forums knowledge. My genesis build for example. The greatest motivator for taking on this project was watching others do it. I never in my past dreams imagined me flying. Now I fly AND am building something. I learn from here.

I don't think your opinion is that divergent Vance.

This Forum is tame compared to some others I check in to. Occasionally we have a dust-up, but I try to stay out of it as much as possible. People disagree all the time in real life, why should it be different here. I would hope that people would try to disagree in a civil manner.

As far as newbies, if they have a question all they have to do is ask. I haven't seen any newbies flamed just for asking a question we've all heard asked before. And if they are like me they will search through a forum for answers before needing to ask any questions.

So if there are any newbies reading this, come on in. The water's fine. :)

Forum is a great place, vital stimulating, and full of people who have a common love of gyros from around the globe.

Just as in life a very mixed bag but everyone brings something to the table.

Yup, some are rude, some are a little mixed up, but on the whole well intentioned ready to help when they can, and it's nice to be ble to come here, make friends, chat and chew the fat, share gyro experiences, learn ask for advice and generaly have a great place to come.

No Vance . . .thank you! Great post!
Notice that, those who don´t like someone or the way they express themselves came here and blasted away, none of the so called "black sheep" said anything.
No I ban myself, no ignore lists, no complaint whatsoever . . .but now I said something towards them . . .lets see how it goes.
If you don´t start, it will not happen . . .read or skip and post if you want.
thanks

Back to the original subject. I don't usually comment on videos because I figure that the person who put them up know that they are good and that it doesn't require 50 hits saying the same thing.
2nd I live in the sticks. The only internet I can get is with a Verizon personal hot spot that only allows me 5gigs a month so if a video is over about 3 minutes long I don't even watch it.
3rd With limited band width I am not going to watch several minutes of tera firma at 1000' agl that I can hop in my gyro and see anytime I want or several minutes of a camera pointed at someones face.
Not bashing or trying to be critical just my opinion on the use of my limited bandwith. I would prefer to use it on watching takeoffs and landings.
I know I am not the only one with this opinion, but I may be the only one willing to get beat up over speaking out.
Cheers.

Paul that is good criticism and well said. I have a friend that lives in Indonesia and has to partition out his use to just under 1 gig a month with a family of seven.

Flying videos are most impressive to newbies wanting to fly. Thats how it was to me. I would sit at the computer for hours watching videos of other flying wishing I could do that. Now that I can and do fly, I enjoy watching from the cockpit rather than the computer screen. I do still watch flying videos just not near as much.

Not only does the forum serve a purpose if used correctly, but it is the main source for information regarding sport rotary winged flight. It is very sad when it is used for personal attacks.

I remember the rec.av. newsgroups. Mayhem.

So I really appreciate this forum.

Love the videos, too.

Keep 'em coming.
