AOPA reported on Tuesday that the Transportation Security Administration has issued a directive that will require background checks for general aviation pilots based at airports served by airlines, starting next year.



Those pilots who pass the background check will receive an ID badge to allow them access to the airport. The directive won't affect transient pilots, AOPA said, who will continue to be subject to the current escorting and monitoring requirements in place at airports that serve air carriers.

Currently, most airports exclude GA operations from these security requirements, but that is about to change. "Pilots have long operated without incident on these airports, and it is surprising that the TSA appears to have implemented such a significant new mandate with no notification or discussion," said Andy Cebula, AOPA executive vice president of government affairs.

"It will have a significant impact on pilots and airports in many small communities across the country." Meanwhile, the TSA has announced a series of public hearings to be held in January to hear public reaction to its Large Aircraft Security Program, which has met with considerable opposition in the aviation world.

The National Business Aviation Association has listed details about the hearings, as well as its analysis of the TSA proposals, at its Web site. The hearings will be held on various dates in January 2009, in White Plains, N.Y.; Atlanta, Ga., Chicago, Ill.; Burbank, Calif.; and Houston, Texas.

I think the pilots form a network of people knowledge that could boost defense instead of doing otherwise. They will loose a valuable asset.
But if you need to keep things undercover, it is best don´t have too many witnesses.

That was being introduced by the TSA when I was with Groen Bros...it's also a rule that a birth certificate as or better yet a passport be produced to the instructor to prove citizenship before any flight can be made.

If you check the LODA that the instructors have to legally carry at all times with them and inside they're machines while in operation, you'll also see that it say's
"no Intro flights".. Instruction only..
Now ain't that a B..Tch

Also you have to get atleast a 24 hour advance APPOINTMENT to enter any FSDO. The FSDO at College Park in Atlanta looks like an obstacle course to drive into the parking lot.

One other Lil Story

I was sent over to GoodYear to pick a gyro up, it's 15 or so miles from Buckeye. As I drove into a pass card gate I didn't stop to await the gate to close behind me.Not reading the sign as I went thru.
A vehicle behind me came thru and called airport security. I noticed a car that followed me thru the gate had followed me. As I was removing the gyro from a hangar a security truck pulled up. I was in a Green Flight suite with Groen. Bros.badge on the left of my chest with my name on it.
The security guard approached me and said to identify myself..DUH !:tape:
After I did so he said I was speeding as well as didn't secure the gate after entering. At that point I started to show my Southern Manners.
No Sir I answered, I did not stop, didn't realize I had to but whom ever told him I was speeding was mistaken or just a Damned Liar.. At that time the driver of the car stepped out, stuttering that he wasn't sure about the speeding because he had to hunt for me thru the hangar area.
The Guard having more sense than the driver of the car instructed me that since 9-11 we all had to be more cautious of life within a secured area.
That being his lecture and warning to appease the notifying party and after they both saw that I had a ring of key's, a Groen Broes Vehicle, a Flight Suite and was pulling a Sparrow Hawk from the hangar, Kinda figured I was on the Up and Up about it.

Oh Well,,,, Thats my war story for the rest of the Year.. Again thanks for the info Tim..

Hey Steve, I know what you mean, regarding airport cops. At Melbourne Florida, we have to wait until the gate closes, and only one car at a time. Today I was informed by the security office that I had to take a class on driving on the airport property, it has been two years since my last class. One month ago our shop personell had to take a class on operating our tug on the taxiways. About every two months, they have a couple of goons sitting in their government cars just inside the gate, and when you come through, they look in your glovebox, and your trunk. They got attitude too. Once one of their Barneys chased me to my hangar, and said I was "speeding", but my "pipes" sounded good?(BIG Block in a shortbed Chevy) Jan first we will be in our new hangar, and wont have to go through the gate. Oh yea, fly BAER AIR when in Florida, we need the business! Mike Hughes.
