Ken Brock Freedom fly-in..the fun flying has started!

Thanks so much for your description Marion of the fun. And, it's must be great to have one of the largest airports in the world in your backyard!

It would be great if you would make posts like that for those who can't join in this year and tease the rest to come and have fun with you!!!!

@Brandon
Brandon thanks for thinking of pictures for us and letting us know whats going on!
We will see you Saturday, CANT WAIT!!!!

I may have mentioned that?

Marion, I think Vance already knows that when I look his Predator in the eyes it brings a smile to my face, not that there is anything wrong with being cross-eyed! If I put the batteries in the charger correctly I will take a picture to explain. See you all in the morning!

As you all seem to know Vance arrived safe and sound. He had only one challenge it seems on his trip and that was getting gas at one of the last airports he was to land at before going on straight to El Mirage.

He called me a 10pm last night he had arrived back at his hotel room after spending the evening over at Marions home. He had a wonderful time meeting and talking with everyone. I just wish I could have gone. Oh well....That's just the way it goes sometimes.

Anyway he wanted me to let everyone on the forum know he safe and sound and appreciates all the help everyone has given him on his journey. He has already spotchecked me this morning at 6:23am it was a gorgeous sunrise here and I expect the sunrise at El Mirage was fairly spectacular. Vance takes pictures for me when I am not able to be with him on his adventures...isn't that sweet!

I will see him this evening and tomarrow he is being inducted into the Dry Lakes Racing Hall of Fame at the gas Up in Buellton then we will go back out to El Mirage and will hopefully fly back together home!

Hope everyone has a great weekend...I'm looking forward to mine!
Cheers! SgurlEd

PS...by the way a special Thanks to Tina for trying to help out with the radio freq. I actually found a thread that you posted last year on the radio freq. and gave them to Vance. We didn't know if they were current but it was better than having nothing at all.
So thanks so much your help is greatly appreciated! Take Care, Ed

Up-date on the Ken Brock Freedom fly-in

Up-date on the Ken Brock Freedom fly-in

This is just a note to let you know that Jim siemer won't be with us this weekend to give a presentation on building rotor blades. He has been under the weather but says he will make next year's fly-in.
We wish Jim a fast return to good health.

Hi Edna I am glad to hear Vance got there OK and had a good trip.

I still did not hear from Marion or anyone at the fly-in about what frequency they are using?

I tried looking up what I put for last year and can not find it. I think it was 122.75 or 122.85 but others told me they some times use 123.45 so you can see my dilemma.

I had some calls from some FW fellas that are going out there and wanted to communicate with other traffic that will be flying and using their radios.

Since the Fly-In has started already and I am not getting any reply I will just tell the FW traffic guys to use 122.85 that always worked for me in the past.

If Marion and Teddy read this or anyone else at the Fly-In please pass the word on that I will be telling the people that are flying out there to use 122.85 including myself when I fly out there Saturday.

Hope every one is having a good time. Dave called me this morning and just arrived and said there is a lot of people that are there already.

looks like fun

I am working in long beach area and i plan on driving up tomorrow morning to hang out a little while. look forward to watching some flying and talking with you folks. Wish i had my gyro with me , but cant have it all . At least i get to watch some fellow rotornuts doing their thing, which is the next best thing to flying itself.:plane:

See you guys tomorrow!!!

The flyin had great weather today and lots of flying and fun.

Just watching the smile on Marion's face as she tore up the sky in her Born Free Gyro was worth the drive. Vance and his passion for flight and seeing him enjoy his newfound distraction is to quote him,"inspirational." Mad Man Mike had his shiny gyro in the air every chance he had with Mark Saunders and his Sparrowhawk enjoying every view that can be seen. Dave had his monster cutting through the sky and Scott gave eveyone a show with his Sportcopter that is always a highlight. While I have seen a lot of people fly a gyroplane, Scott has a way to make his dance in a way that you know he enjoys it. Teddy flew a bit today and yes, his gyro is unique and nice, I think its Frank with a Bensen modify, his gyro just wants to fly and he made some passes with smiles. Glen Patterson came in with his bird and gave everyone a great show at sunset. A few helicopters came in and out and the common factor I saw was a huge smile on every pilots face which is what it is all about. Great day. I'll try to post pictures later when I figure out my new camera, but if you have a chance, come play with us, it is a great time.

Hi All,

I had an enjoyable day today at El Mirage for the Ken Brock Freedom Fly-In. My friend Dan (we're old military buddies) enjoyed himself too, along with my wife.

Marion, it's always a pleasure to speak with you in person. I enjoyed watching you fly and I could see a constant smile on your face every time you passed by the flight line. I still desire to sit at length with you and chat about flying and gyros.

Teddy, nice meeting and chatting with you too. Your passion for gyros is wonderful.

Scott, even though it was short, I enjoyed meeting, shaking your hand, and chatting with you too. Next time it will have to be for a longer period. You're love of flying your gyro shows both in the sky and on the ground. Keep up that enthusiasm. I look forward in meeting you again in the future and visit for a longer period of time.

John, I loved you and your brother's hats! I'm happy to finally meet you in person. Now get your self trained and get those gyros you want flying.

Mark, thanks for meeting with me, showing, and discussing about your Sparrowhawk. It's a nice and clean machine and you did an outstanding job. I'm impressed how quiet it is in the air.

Mike, I just love the "art deco" look of your gyro, polished almuminum, rivets, and all. That EA81 with the single collector exhaust sure gives it a nice deep sound. Thanks for chat.

Dave, glad to see you again this year. Hopefully, you'll be able to make it to the Wings, Wheels, and Rotors event at the Los Alamitos AAF at the end of October.

The rest that I can not recall your nake at this moment, I'm still happy to have met and chatted with you all.

I can't wait to see everyone's pictures and comments later in the week.

Take care!

Wayne

I think I'm having withdrawal symptoms. You can't do something as long as I have been coming to El Mirage and not suffer some when you can't go. Although I have not been flying as much the last 2 years there, I still miss all of you. Have enough fun to share with those of us who couldn't make it.

Tom I missed you

Tom I missed you

Tom I missed you and the great little band of musicians . You all are a big part of the fly-in for me.
I am just barely out of bed at this moment and hopefully will be able to get dressed and get my face washed at least before Mad Man Mike gives me his usual early morning " wake up" fly-by . His fly-bys are up close and personal ( to the ground, that is ) and could only happen in a place like El Mirage where there are no federal eyes and no neighbors to complain and far from complaining, I just love them!
Later when I'm fully awake I will write in greater detail about the fly-in. For now I'll just say it was wonderful.
I hope you will be able to join us next year.
Take care of yourself.
Marion

Marion, after all this time, it was nice to watch you flying around this year. You are an inspiration to many, and by not letting the dream of flight slip away despite the challenges, only shows the inner strength you possess. Your flying was crisp, and fun to watch. Thanks again for your kind words, and you looked much happier flying this year than watching as a spectator in years gone by.

Mark: I have been watching this thread and especially thinking of you and the enjoyment you are having again flying. I felt so sorry for you at Bensen Days 2007....but what a long ways you have come.

Stan

Mark,
Glad to hear you had a great time. If I know you, I know you took a bunch of photos from the air. How about posting some?

can someone get pics of their Safari? I hear it is a sweet machine.

Tim

Stu and Kathy publish a magazine, Experimental Helicopter. I bought a gift subscription for my helicopter-happy brother last Christmas. I had previously signed him up for EAA and PRA. He decided to let PRA go as it's mostly gyros and he doesn't care for them. He stuck with EAA and is sticking with Experimental Helicopter. There are frequently pictures of the Fields' helicopter.

I think when Stu started building it, it was a Baby Belle, but Bell Helicopter Textron actually sued Canadian Home Rotors/acehelicopter and made them change the name. Hence, Safari.

Here are some pictures of Stu and Kathy's machine:

Sorry, it's a kinda lame flash thing.

cheers

Here are two pictures to show why Vance's Preditor brings a smile to my face with its personality!

A funny story from the KBFFI was when I arrived, Mad Man Mike needed some gas from town and with it being dark he loaded 3 cans in my truck to fill. When in town I started to fill them for him and found he must have stored his empties close to his generator exhaust. A picture is better than words, they did not hold much fuel!:flame:
