El Mirage accident ?

For the line-speed-challenged;

A pilot was injured Saturday afternoon when his homemade gyrocopter crashed at El Mirage Dry Lake Bed and caught fire, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department reported.

The man, described only as an Anaheim resident, was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton for treatment, said Arden Wiltshire, a Sheriff's Department spokeswoman.

"The craft caught fire on impact, but the occupant was able to get out of the aircraft," Wiltshire said. "He suffered severe burns to the left side of his body."

The accident was reported at 1:20 p.m. in the remote High Desert community, northwest of Adelanto. El Mirage Dry Lake Bed is in the vast El Mirage Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation Area. The small El Mirage Airport is just south of the lake bed.

The pilot, who also owns the experimental aircraft, was alone aboard the gyrocopter. The pilot also suffered some moderate internal injuries.

"No one on the ground was injured. He was the only one," Wiltshire said.

Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration are expected to visit the crash site on Sunday to investigate, she added.

The area also is popular with remote control airplane hobbyists and aviation enthusiasts who build their own "ultralight" aircraft, Wiltshire said.

Sad to hear. It sounds from the article like the injuries are not life-threatening.

Please keep us posted.

I'm hoping it isn't Dave, Tina, or Tad or really anyone on the forum.

Sorry to hear someone was hurt.

We are OK.
Tina, Dave and Teddy
It was new comer to the gyro business and loner. His own design .
He try first time taxi and get in the air , lost control and crash
He going to be ok
Teddy

Teddy,
Glad to hear he will be ok and it wasn’t you, Dave, Glen, Scott or the others that I met there. Knew it wasn’t Tina because the report said him. Sorry for the accident, but glad you are all ok!

Hi,
Do I understand this correctly? Someone without training in a design of his own crashes and burns the first time he taxi's? DEFINITELY a candidate for the Darwin award. I didn't really believe this sort of thing actually happens. Why would anyone be this deliberately foolish?

Amen to that! As the old saying goes, "You can lead them to water but you can't make 'em drink." So many people out there just KNOW they're so much better and smarter than the rest of the world, that they can beat the laws of physics and aerodynamics without any training.

And, of course, we in the gyro community end up with yet another black mark against us in the eyes of the general public. (sigh.... )

Glad he's going to be OK and really, really glad it wasn't anyone from our group.

It's a scourge of this hobby. It seems to come from having the cheapest, quickest aircraft to build. All the impatient yahoo's are attracted to gyros like moth to flame.

I am assuming that this guy was possibly untrained. If I am wrong about that my apologies in advace. I am making a statement about the hobby in general, as I have no specific data on this person.

Thanks Teddy for the report. I agree that it is amazing some think they are so much smarter than the established gyro community.

I can think of some people on this forum who think they know more than they do.

Thank you, Vance

some people just dont listen

some people just dont listen

We tried to tell Luca, a Russian about 65, what he was doing was WRONG but we said that he knew what he has doing, He just would not listen. We all knew something bad was going to happen, but we just could not stop him.

Luca said he was just going to taxi to get the feel of his 2 place machine I think it was a something like a parson design. He made it 1/4 mile before taking of behind the power curve, blade strike the ground, flipped over, and burst into flames, from what I heard. If that one of the people that he was with hadn't pulled he out of the burning gyro he would have Burt to death.

Sorry Tina and I didn't report about this sooner, but we have been busy getting chapter 1 going again. Tina will post about that on another thread.

Thank you for the report Dave.

That is exciting about chapter 1.

Thank you, Vance
