I'm getting my fill of quiet time.

I've been having trouble with my Hirth weeping oil and I retorqued everything right before Bensen days (but never took the air shroud off where I could see very well) and have only flown for 30-45 minutes since then waiting on some special gasket sealant recommended by Rec Power to get in.

Well this week everything got in, and today I tore into it to put a new top end gasket set on. I found my oil weeping problem.

Gotta order more parts now. Ughh

another success story

another success story

Save your money on the parts,

That would make a nice potted plant holder for fathers day.

Get a rotax and save yourself the drama.

At least the pistons look clean!

I replaced those gaskets at about 125 hours, oil weeping, I wonder if there was some kind of casting flaw. It always seeped oil around the rear cyl.

I did clean the cylinders (ultrasonic) and inspect them and did not see any cracks, that sucks. but it still ran OK?

Yes.. In fact I started it and ran it for a few minutes then let it cool down right before I began tearing it down. It ran great.

In the picture, the corner that broke off is the closest and furthest to the right. You can see on the gasket where oil was channeling through the crack on both sides of the lug.

With the other guys above that said they have had trouble with the same problem, I'm going to ask the Rec Power guys if there has been any change in the design like a slight beefing up of those corner tabs.

I'm also trying to decide if I should go ahead and order both cylinders and heads and new rings or if getting just the one cylinder and rings would be OK.

Does anyone know if the cylinder and head is matched set? In other words best to buy both to get the best fit on the gasket surface.

Even if I do run across a good Rotax deal in the near future, I'll have to have this thing back running in top condition to sell it.

The heads and cylinders are not matched. However, there is a front head and a rear head.
The fins are different, I think larger area on the rear.

JB Weld and a little Pro Seal should fix that right up --

The first generation of that welding rod was pretty good but, not for a ear on a cylinder with pressure and heat. This new stuff looks good????? Haven't tried it though. BUT we have welded up cracks in our racing quads and machined them back to better than new.
They would only hold 180 lbs of compression and live, after the welding they were good to around 230+, but we could just step off when things went wrong. The curb is a little further down on this. You could polish the ears on a new jug so there is no weak lines to start a crack next time, all aluminium needs is a starting point, might work or not.

Well.. I ordered a complete grey head 582 with B box from Light Sport Repair Services in Plymouth Indiana. It will come with log book and is 0 time since rebuild..and that rebuild is just finishing. It won't have been sitting for any time before I get it. This one came off of a Buckeye PPC.

I came real close to pulling the trigger on a blue head, but its back story wasn't as good.

I'm taking votes on whether or not to spend th e $800 and put a new cylinder on the Hirth and sell it for around $2000-$3000. But some think it may or may not sell. What do you guys think? It would add insult to injury (wallet) if I got it running again and then couldn't even sell it. What do the loyal gyro forum members think?

Sorry to hear you passed up on that Blue head Robert. I know that particular engines complete back story and I wouldn't have hesitated one bit on using it.

It had a far better gearbox, electric start, a prop, and basically it too could be considered rebuilt.

The blue head is a FAR more reliable engine over the older grey head.

And unless you watched the shop install a brand new Rotax crankshaft, it wasn't overhauled. Most people advertising "rebuilt" Rotax engines, and I am talking about dealers and repair centers, etc.... do NOT replace the crankshaft when they do a so called rebuild on these engines. They usually just hone the cylinders and install new pistons and clean the outside of the engine and call it a rebuild. To do a true overhaul on a Rotax 582 would cost around 2600-3000$. Good luck with it. Either way it should be a better engine than the Hirth! :)
