Either his handling agents are good or Norm is very good at dealing with the airport authorities.

It can be a real bear just getting the fueling done, paying the landing fees, checking the weather, putting in the next flight plan, dealing with customs and immigration, then getting airborne again.

Anywhere along that chain there will be problems unless you have a four leaf clover, rabbits foot and a wad of cash. Helps to be a diplomat and if possible multilingual. Handling can be a godsend.

From Thiland,it looks like he is going to be doing a lot of island hopping and a lot of over water flying. Hope the flooding in Burma doesn't develope any equipment problems for him.

Just a reminder, you can follow a blog at;

gyroxgoesglobal.blogspot.com

Gives a little more day-to-day info.

Unpleasant news: Norm made a forced landing into a shallow lake right after take-off from Nong Prue airfield near Pattaya, Thailand.
Aircraft is damaged, Norm is reported OK and assessing possible gyro repair.

Bud news Alex!!!!

I hope he can repair and continue!!

That is very sad news indeed.

Hot heavy with marginal performance due to fuel load, and who know what obstacles.

I sincerely hope that the damage is repairable and that he can continue. He has come a long way in very good time.

Waiting to hear more details on the actual event.

Resasi-spoke to tony m today the gyro crashed at the airfield he goes to in thailand - tom is helping out (scots land who has raf at little riss)
by the sounds of it trip is as good as over machine "landed" at 180 deg into lake tom says machine he feels is beyond repair

very sad

Oh that sucks!

Thanks for the info....

John (Chaser-M), just found out last night that was the same airfield that Tom is working from and saw pictures of our very own Gyro Guru Tony Melody with Tom and Mae.

Tom should certainly have a fair idea what the state of gyro is, and that is indeed very bad news.

I am really sorry as he was doing spectacularly well. I am wondering if there would be any possibility of him being able to get a replacement machine and continue with the journey?

I would have to believe that MT would be getting amazing publicity from this record breaking epic flight

Good idea Leigh, If any of you folks knows or has a relationship with the manufacture. We would ask you to email or call the manufacture. Let them know he is down and might be out unless they step up and loan him a replacement aircraft. It would be great PR to help and even better advertizing that their aircraft went all the way around the world.

I would be surprised if they were not already involved John (All-in), you and Chaser-M are both Johns. He is a hanger mate in the UK. Has not one but two gyros the lucky dog.

He must have been in close contact with MT anyway as I would imagine he would have set up something in the evnt of spares being required. May not have counted on that being a whole new gyro though.:sorry:

This is sad to hear. I am glad Norm is ok.

Scandinavian resseller for Auto-Gyro products is in China right now helping our friends from China learn to fly. Rotax specialist from our club is in Nongrue also. The world is so small :) Could they do something to help?
