Yup, it is way off topic.

How the Earth Was Made DVD

Based on recent findings by renowned scientists and filmed on location across the globe, HOW THE EARTH WAS MADE puts the "Gee!" in geology. Visit sites planet-wide where you can still see evidence of Earth's birthing process. Meet scientists at the leading edge of discovery. Thrill to the awesome power and unimaginable time-scale of world formation.

THE HISTORY CHANNEL®, true to its name, is taking viewers on a visually mesmerizing and richly informative journey to the absolute beginning of our history. Be sure you can enjoy every moment of this unprecedented exploration by adding this DVD to your library!

This is probably the best presentation I have seen on the earth's history and is understood as basics by most geologist. Geology is investigating the earth at many different scales in time and size.

If you are totally solid on your understanding that man's activity is of great concern to global warming. Then this is the documentary for you. If you would like a good understanding of the earths history and final destination. Again this documentary is for you.

Although the focus is on history, not global warming, the final destination of the earth illustrates that man has little or no control. The earth is not static, we just happend to live in a small stable frame of the earth's history.

The documentary blows Al Gore out of the water unintentionally.

Catch it on the History Channel or on DVD.

With you Larry.

Man undoubtedly does have a global impact.

My own opinion is that we are also incredibly presumptuous in estimating our ability to change or alter events that have been occurring since long before we were ever around.

Is the whole six days covered in the one DVD?

Nice one Paddy. Very droll.:)

Our knowledge of the earths climate tells us that it is terribly complex, changes greatly over time and will continue to do so with or without us.

What many people don't understand is that just because the earth is a changing system they think man can have no impact or is having no impact and what we are seeing is a natural cycle.

What the science does tell us is that the weather and climate systems are FRAGILE. And the more we learn about the process the more we learn we are throwing wrenches in the gear-works with the pollution we are creating.

The politically educated ( rather then scientifically educated ) often equate the history of vast climate changes means man can have no impact when in-fact this data portrays a very delicate system that man CAN impact.

Saying "its going to change anyway" is not an excuse for bringing down a global weather disaster hundreds of years yearly and in a far swifter manor that it would occur naturally just for the GREED of those who have a stake in the oil glut.

Even if you do think that man is having no impact that does not change the fact that the "cure" for global warming are actions that we should be doing anyway and we should have been doing for some time. Such as freeing ourselves from foreign oil dependence, using non-polluting renewable energy sources, inventing, designing and patenting more efficient engines and equipment.

Thanks to our oil glut blinders and pseudo-science and government anti-science positions Europe and Asia are better positioned to be the global leaders in this technology, which will be one of the leading economic technologies in the coming decades.

The US should be the lead innovator in these fields not the rest of the world. Even the Arabs are building zero-emission CITIES and we can not even pass a sane energy policy (much to their delight).

Our addiction to oil, funds the political will to keep us addicted to oil, funds foreign research and development of efficient and renewable energy use that we will then have buy from the people who addicted us to oil in the first place, funds terrorism, funds radical muslims and in doing so we fund the removal of the US as the leading player in the future of the world. We are funding our own demise with a big happy (dumb) smile on our face.

I wish Mr. Gore had not made that film. If someone from the right had or someone not involved directly in politics perhaps there would be much less politically motivated "cherry-picking" of scientific information and spin that clouds the issue of global warming (which is a misnomer, it should be called critical global climate change as the effect may cause an ice-age and lower temps for much of the globe, especially Europe).

While we pour a giant chunk of $$$ our economy into overseas oil and our children receive science and math educations that are the worst in the developed world the Arabs and terrorist states sit back, laugh and count the money.

Actually it is a matter of ECONOMICS - especially right now with the current financial desaster - to orient industry towards zero-emmission production and transportation.

Why ?

Decentralized electric power production by wind-mills, off-shore wind-parks, tide-power-plants, sun-collectors etc. makes the energy net in the US and also the rest of the world more flexible and independant from local environmental catastrophies and global energy monopolists.

Why not melt the steel in sunny deserts with solar-power ?

On one hand it helps our globe not to suffer too much from us humans but since nobody gives a sh.. on earth it is much more stringent to point out that this new industry creates new jobs and wealth ´cause this new tech can be exported to China and India as well.

As a side effect it prevents "wars for oil".

It could be the third technological revolution in the US and help to overcome the current crisis.

PS: "It´s the economy, stupid!" (Citation B.Clinton)

PS: my below words are mere theory if something happens I saw on TV in an American documentary on the Yellowstone-national-park:

If the Volcano there explodes once it will be a super-volcano and it will be the dawn of humanity then .......... :sorry:

Only thing is: the scientists dunno if it happens next year or in 100yrs. but it will happen.

Till then: let´s take care on our beautiful planet :hippie:, he won´t on us.

Get involved. Our little 1A school (175 students) has recieved the "Governor Achievement Award" three years in a row. U.S. News ranked us in the top 1000 schools in the Nation. We have highly motivated students. As a school board member, I have high expectations from both students and teachers especially in the areas of english, math and science. We have recent grads at MIT, Harvard, and Med schools. Not bad for a town of 650 people. (PS, We took second in state last year in football and basketball loosing by a total of 5 pts combined). We are a great town and encourage great people to move here.

The only person you can blame is yourself if you are not part of the solution in education. This video travels the 4.5 billion years of the earth's history. Watch the video and then contrast the effects of the greatest global warming gas that at one time in the early history would have crush all life with nearly 12x the weight. If you have a passion for science then it is video you should view as it is presented from a historical geologic point of view.

Watch the animals behavior.
Whales are now going up to Ceara´s coast, pretty close to the equador line.
WE just send the penguins back, they came to far north and got in trouble, many died.
Yesterday a whale was spotted in Rio, that kind never been this far north.
Many animals are trying to swim up the Amazon river, maybe an old route they feel is opening again.
WE maybe acelerated the process that would happen anyhow.
The Volcano is said to burst in 2011 by some sensitives.
To me it is a reason for what is going on with America and the shake down on economy, money is been relocated.
Brazil sounds like a good option for "Them" to move to. I still can say who they are.

When they come out with a DVD explaining WHY the world was made ( not involving
imaginary friends ), I'll buy it.

That is fantastic!

That is interesting. Now days when I read a 'Blog-esk" article that has no references to actual scientific publications and articles I tend to give it a miss. 99 out of 100 times it turns out to be a shade-tree scientist that began a Google search with an agenda and not a scientist that was looking for a multi-discipline consensus.

I find that if I want to learn about Science and not opinions or politics that going to an actual Scientific Journal (like Scientific American, New Scientist and the like) rather than a Blog or newspaper article is much more productive. Here is a good link:

https://environment.newscientist.com/channel/earth/climate-change/

This might 'shed some light' on the matter (pardon the pun).

https://solar-center.stanford.edu/sun-on-earth/glob-warm.html

Again this is really a moot point as the "cure" to 'Global Warming' is what we need to be doing for the good of our nation anyway. Spreading poor science data simply plays into the hands of the most profitable industry in human history, the oil companies.

Solar Variability & Global Warming

Some uncertainty remains about the role of natural variations in causing climate change. Solar variability certainly plays a minor role, but it looks like only a quarter of the recent variations can be attributed to the Sun. At most. During the initial discovery period of global warming, the magnitude of the influence of increased activity on the Sun was not well determined.

Solar irradiance changes have been measured reliably by satellites for only 30 years. These precise observations show changes of a few tenths of a percent that depend on the level of activity in the 11-year solar cycle. Changes over longer periods must be inferred from other sources. Estimates of earlier variations are important for calibrating the climate models. While a component of recent global warming may have been caused by the increased solar activity of the last solar cycle, that component was very small compared to the effects of additional greenhouse gases. According to a NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) press release, "...the solar increases do not have the ability to cause large global temperature increases...greenhouse gases are indeed playing the dominant role..." The Sun is once again less bright as we approach solar minimum, yet global warming continues.

"the solar increases do not have the ability to cause large global temperature increases."

Actually just a matter of scale.

Dang oil companies, wish they would quit lowering the price.
