For most of you, who own a gyroplane, this may be interesting news..... or maybe not... or maybe you already know about it.... A long time ago I saw this engine mounted on a ULM tube and fabric of Italian manufacture... but the engine conversion project at that time was too young and there were many things to fine-tune: two of all were the many vibrations and the excessive heating of the engine, now according to what written on Flyer-UK apparently they must have found the solution.... you who have the gyroplane can draw your own considerations...

Way back in the last century, I flew a Bellanca 7ACA Champion that was powered by a 60 hp Franklin 2A-120 two cylinder, horizontally opposed engine. Being only two cylinders, the airframe resonated with a very distinct vibrating "buzz" as compared to a four cylinder Continental C-65 engine. It wasn't annoying, just noticeably unique.

Since the BMW will operate at a higher RPM, I'm sure the frequency of the "buzz" will be greater.

With proper engineering and testing, only time will tell if the BMW engine will be a successful alternative.

I’ve seen many trikes with the BMW boxer and several gyros.
It’s a good engine.

QThis is my gyro Ela junior 09 with a BMW gs1200 100hp 7 years of use without a iota of problem 💪

I researched this engine 15 years ago, it has been used on a number of ultralights, the weight can be reigned in by cutting off significant
unused parts of the case. I always thought it would be a good candidate for serious turbo charging because it is a very stout engine and has German tolerances. The 1000cc and 1100cc versions can be found in box condition and are easily rebuilt, just throw away the $%#@&& Bing carburators...... Even SU's would be better!!!! (I can't believe I said that in public....)
The down side is that it is a "Thumper", really strong impulses from this design, hopefully a belt drive would tame that a bit......

There is a lot of mustering gyros around oz with rotax motors and bing carbs doing thousands after thousands of hours, I wouldn't be so quick to throw the bing carbs:)

I personally hate them, even more with ethanol fuel.
Every Beemer motorcycle I owned had problems with the float/needle sealing even when just rebuilt.
Having the sunk float issue with the ones on my 503. $200 to $400 for 4 little floats that should be about $25 a piece and they sink in about 2 years from what I can gather....
I would love to strap a 2 barrel Delorto on this thing and then basically forget about it.....

I would use one of the carbs that operate without jets. They are pricey at around 900 bucks.
Is it basically a throttle body?

So the older R1200s are carbureted? I have an R1250 GS Adventure and it's fuel-injected. Funny this thread should pop-up. I was riding the Beemer the other day and thinking this would be a great motor in a gyro.
