SparrowHawk

That's a steep price for a used aircraft with a junkyard car engine... what does a Magni with a Rotax 912S cost?

Used Magni prices

Used Magni prices

A used Magni with a Rotax 914 turbocharged engine runs $15,000 - 20,000 or so less than they are asking for their birds! A new Magni kit will cost about the same as they are asking.

There aren't many used Magni's for sale, though. Greg sold his demonstrator in late 2005, if I remember, and I bought mine in 2006.

We went to Spanish Fork and took lessons for a week. We camped on the airport. While a friend was taking a lesson they heard a sharp pop and returned to the airport. There was a bullet hole in the prop. All authorities were notified, but noone was ever apprehended for shooting at the gyro. If it is the one I am thinking about, it has a special, built up suburu engine that makes (I think) 195 HP. It has a lot of extras and probably is worth the asking price. The second one, I think was being built for a customer and probably was not picked up. If these are the ones I am thinking about, it probably means that they are no longer instructing. That would be a shame.

Airgyro.

Airgyro.

I think, dont hold me to it but I remember Shawn Adams, Mr Imax, Mr Rotor-Head, trained in that machine with CFI Burton. I remember the gyro being hit, they posted a few photos. I was mad that some sad useless waste of life tried to kill a gyro pilot. I think they moved flight operations to safer skies but had not heard anything since.

Wonder what the story is.

Years ago I was flying my Piper Pacer into Compton Airport in Southern California to visit a friend. While I was taxing in after landing a few people were wildly waving at me. When I stopped next to my friend's hanger and got out of the plane, I saw that I had 3 bullet holes in the fabric near the vertical stabilizer. Obviously, while on final, the scumbag that was shooting at me didn't know how to lead and was aiming at the cockpit.

During the L.A. Riots of 1992, I was flying aerial recon in a UH-1 at 3,000 msl. After we landed, we found 8 bullet holes in the tail boom of the chopper (7.62 rounds, AK-47). Again aiming at the cockpit.

At Whiteman Airport some 25 years ago, there was a sniper who would hide on the hill behind the airport and shoot at planes, hangers, and people on the ramp. No one was ever hit because the shooter had poor aim. Still, everytime he would shoot, a call would be placed to the LAPD station near by (less than a mile away - Foothill Division), but by the time the call was answered, the shooter was gone. I started to carry my Mini-14 every time I went to the airport. Finally, one day the sniper shot at me while I was on the ramp. I turned and faced the hill, gave him the finger and yelled out that his momma was a whore. That pissed him off and he fired off 4 more rounds, but I saw where he was. His rounds were hitting the asphalt about 5 feet to my left. I retrieved my Mini-14 from the trunk of my car and quickly shot 5 rounds back into a bush where I saw muzzle flashes come from. The shooting stopped. No sooner than I picked up my brass and put the rifle away when a LAPD black & white rolled up. I told them about the muzzle flashes from the specific bush on the hill and we three walk up there. We find numerous brass casings and some blood on the ground trailing away. That was the last day anyone reported they had been shot at - problem solved.

Lastly, the Goodyear Blimp, Spirit of America, based in Carson, California has to go into one of the big blimp hangers at the old Tustin MCAS once a year to have the bullet holes patched up.

Way to go Wayne!!!

Sounds like it wasn't fun for him anymore. Big baby.

Militia Compound

Militia Compound

Probably flew over a militia compound and thought the big G gub'ment was after 'em...

Crazies!!

Thank god for people with poor aim. Flying UH-60's in Iraq at night, you'd see mucho tracer fire about 200-300 ft behind the aircraft...they were shooting at the sound (we were blacked out) - we were also moving at 140 knots.

During the day, we'd fly low and fast. 150 KIAS at 75 ft hard deck.

Wahoo!!!

....at least you can't see tracer fire during the day!!

Airgyro Aviation is alive and well. They are just upgrading their Sparrowhawks to the newer versions and selling the older ones. I am heading down for a lesson next week and hope to finish up with my Sport license this summer.

We are still going strong. We are just updating to the SC II.

I wonder if that SH has those 'Trapp " noise makers fitted ??

We updated the trapps to aircraft mufflers. We still fly out of Spanish Fork Utah. I believe that the shooter has since moved. The farm that we were flying over is now housing.

I asked the officer taking the report of the shooting in SF if I could fire back. He replied that it would not be considered self defense as I had the option to flee. If I were to kill the attacker it would be considered murder. Good thing they did not find the guy dead in the brush. Not saying that I would not want to do the same thing just glad you were not injured and that you did not get in trouble for the shooting.

flying an ultralight over Paris ca. we were shot at while flying over a field... My instructor and I didnt like it..
