Rotax 583 powered Q1 Quickie

I still bet on direct drive, short prop can handle some rpms......

A guy was killed a few years ago at my airport in one of those. He had just converted it from a tail dragger to a trike. I do not know if it would have worked.

Sounds like a R/C glow engine

That thing sounds way to annoying to be enjoyable. I'd take a short video and go back inside. I wonder what it sounds like in the cockpit?

As easily as he hand propped the engine I guarantee ya its most likely direct drive. He sure seems confident in it! Sweet!

Remove the gearbox, machine a hub that fits the crank shaft, and bolt on a prop.
As to why, you would have to ask the builder.

How EXACTLY would you 'direct drive' a propellor on a 582? Furthermore, WHY?:noidea:

lighter weight, prop clearance issues, etc.... And take another look...... it was a 583 THREE not TWO.... 583 is a sled engine, not a aircraft engine, far more powerful, and not sure it was ever designed to have a gearbox on it. This video is from the early 90's, back when you could still come across some crazy stuff

Earthbound- So you had a Kawasaki 750 triple also? I bought a brand new one the last year they were made, 1974. It was a MachIV, H2. 750 cc triple two stroke. Back then it was advertised at the quickest production bike with 12.0 second 1/4 mile times. Of course that is a dog by todays low 10 second machines, but it was plenty quick for me. I did some port work on the cylinders with my dremel tool, and even ground the bottom of the piston skirts to alter the timing. This was all done for my Denco expansion chambers. That thing was a ride after that! Next I had to put in much stronger clutch springs to hold that power. It was a burgundy color....and I wish I had never sold it.

Stan

Stan, mine had Denco's too! I had a slick looking one piece 'Tracy' cafe body on mine. The tank was smaller, and blended down and back to a solo saddle, then up to a nice ducktail. Fast but ILL handling by ANY standard. Had several RD350/400's with pipes, carbs, etc. Me and 2 strokes go WAY back. Had a YZ400 when I was 17...
