With a twist throttle on a stick…twist it CW or CCW for power increase?

Ed, I use a twist grip throttle on the control stick of my gyro.

Counter clockwise is open and clockwise is closed on the throttle. The stick is in the center of the gyro.

After looking at that drawing….I remembered that the HU1A rolled the throttle to flight-idle and then a switch brought the governor up to flight rrpm…..so maybe I'm thinking of the H-13. I think I've been riding cycles too long…..

Yep...just like a motorcycle Marion, which was the way I was headed, but I can see the helicopter direction is the best way for me. Once I have my gyro flying and heli pilots see how cool it flies, they will beg to give it a go....and end up pitching their heli to the side ;).

Yep...I do...it was a great idea to combine the throttle and pre-rotator on a stick. And I remember that video and especially the second one....I was a nervous wreck....

A standard motorcycle twist grip throttle adapted for mounting on a collective stick looks like this:

Thanks Chuck, that's the way I pictured it. I don't care for the cable loop at the end of a swing-arm, so I thought of repositioning that throttle assembly, as you show it, to the opposite side, aft of the collective pivot point. Then install a needle bearing grip where shown with a shaft running aft through the collective tube to the modified throttle assembly.

It also may be possible to pitch that throttle assembly and fab a lever similar to what Gabi did with his throttle....although I kinda like the double cable type because all play can be eliminated in the throttle.

Thanks again everyone!

Give the cable loop a coat of gold paint and pretend it’s the hand guard on your saber (sabre?).

I did mine with a helix in the grip and a slot in the stick, the cable came up through the stick, this makes a very clean installation.

Heheh…..no Chuck, it is not the way it looks that bothers me….it's my clumsiness….I would somehow end up with my arm and/or leg caught in that loop while trying to move the collective…..

It does sound like it would be clean and simple Norman…except for the helix. I like the redundancy and adjustability of two cables though, and being chicken….I kinda like the idea of flipping a quality motorcycle throttle.

back when I used the 3 cylinder evinrude with 3 carbs I ran all three cables to the slider so you could run more than one from the same carb or it is possible to machine a second helix and have two seperate systems in one twist grip, however in the past when I had throttle failure it has been the cable breaking in the carb where it attaches to the slide. The reason I used this system is for it's resistance to freezing when left outside in foul weather in winter and the ability to match throttle travel to different carbs.

Hello Ed, I have found you can use the push pull throttles either way.

Some already have a right angle that allows the cable to run close to the bar.

In my experience the helix style always has a lot of play.

Thank you, Vance

Vance you are correct about free play with helix systems but with a spring return on the rotax and simular engines there is no problem.

You are right Vance….I looked closely at my bike throttle and the two 90° cable guides will swivel 180° when that assembly is flipped….I kinda like my Suzuki one ;). I could rotate the guides so they are pointed down and aft, with almost no loop.

The helix one Norman would be cleaner but it would be difficult to make it push/pull and there will be no spring return.
