My name is Chris Thompson. I spent many, many summers at airports around the nation with my grandfather Steve Graves. It's been about 10 years since I last flew in a gyro, but am considering making the annual voyage to the PRA convention in Ohio, if that's where it still is.

Does anyone know of any CFI's that live in the Charlotte, NC area. I'm interested in looking into getting certified. I wonder if all the instructional hours from 10 years ago that I have in a flight log book still count.

Chris, welcome to the forum!

The PRA National Convention is now held annually in mentone, IN, where the PRA has purchased its own airport. It was held this year the first week in August.

The next major gyro event is the annual Ken Brock Freedom Fly-In hosted by PRA Chapter 1, at the El Mirage dry lakebed in southern CA. It's a terrific event, happening Fri-Sun, September 28-30, but earlybirds will be there as early as Wednesday the 26th.

Those 10 hours still count, but the point is being ready to take your check ride. After a 10-year layoff, it's hard to know how much you'll need to (a) be ready and (b) convince an instructor who must sign you off that you're ready.

Do you have an airplane private certificate? Sport Pilot add-on might be a cost-effective and safe option for you, then move up to add the full private gyro rating.

Good luck to you! There's a wealth of interesting info here, some very knowledgeable people, and occasionally some highly entertaining bickering which can be very informative.

Hi Bud,

I saw Steve at Mentone. He looked great. If you ever had to choose sides in a fight, choose the side with Steve on it.

You are right Jim,I would certanily be on Steves side! Glad to hear that he is doing good. Thank you, Bud

I haven't seen him in a year or two. I'll be out in MO where he is living now for Thanksgiving and will probably get a chance to see him again.

I'll be making plans to make it to next years convention then.
