Don't worry, I'm not going to post all of my vacation photos!

Just the flying ones!!

Connie and I went out to the OuterBanks this weekend for beach combing and sailing.... of course I could not just stay on the ground so we went para-sailing.. and still I needed more flying fix so I hired a Britten Norman Islander :plane: to haul us up and down the bank islands for a day.

Here are the photos....

The Britten Norman Islander was an impressive plane.

She is powered by twin Lycomings and can take off and land in a few hundred feet.

Connie and I had to sit in the third row of seats for proper weight and balance. (They seat 8 passingers, PLUS 2 pilots, and a bench)

We folded down the seats in front of us and had a great view.

If you enlarge this photo you can see some black plastic 'fence' that is used to help baby loggerhead sea turtles find their way to ocean when they hatch. If they hatch and see headlights or building lights they will get confused and go away from the sea.

the islander is My dream plane. It will T/O in 500 feet and is a mule hauling cargo. Still is far from budget.

If you want to fly and take pics come to PR. we have around 20 of does flying in the island in and out
chuckP

Thanks Chuck!

I am still very keen on coming down to fly and visit you.

The islander was a very impressive machine!

There is another version with a third engine in the tailfin. It looks funny but has even better performance. It's called the "Trislander."

I used to go to Suriname a lot on business, I guess you'd call it. The Suriname Air Force was a bunch of interesting guys. They had a wide range of aircraft in the eighties but due to no money for maintenance all the high-speed stuff was rusting, and all that was flying were a couple of defenders (armed Islanders) and a Cessna 182 or two.

I've heard a rumor that B-N will be putting a life limit on the planes. Dunno if there's any substance to it.

cheers

Good to see you made your pilgrimage to FFA. It would be even nicer if there was not so much development and a cel phone tower every 50'.

Did you go inside to view the exhibits ?

Notice that Igor Bensen is for some reason M.I.A ...

You have reminded me to write the park service and find out why.

Had I known you were up there maybe we could have met for lunch or something. Last Sunday was too windy to fly up there though.

Wonder what the fuel burn of that plane is.

Jonathan

kevin, I am not sure what the third engine would do for one as they already take off and land on a dime. Then again there were only 3 of us in the aircraft at the time.

Life limit? as in XXX hours and the plane is scrap no matter the maintainance?

Yeeech. Must be some sort of structure problem.

Jonathan,

Yes, we did go through the exhibits. Nearly nothing on rotorcraft.

We plan to go back next year and take the truck with some scooters and maybe a skido with us and take the whole week. I will let you know!

Great vacation spot

Great vacation spot

Tim,

I tried with Chapter 13 members to organize an Outer Banks Fly OUT ! No one wanted to go even the local pilots dropped out at the last min. It is a great place to vacation and we are planning on going back there in October. Prior to the peak $eason kicking in. Rates go thru the roof then. You can vacation any way you want from RV parks across from the surf to expensive motels.

Since you and Connie know what a great place it is now maybe those who are lurking might want to make it next year when we plan the 08 trip. Katherine and I packed light and flew there from [bayboro international 7NC0] with a stop at plymouth. It was about a 2 hour flight to Manteo, KMQI.

Jonathan,

I can tell you that it was a GREAT time. I travel alot for work and for pleasure and thus have been to populated and rural coasts.

I would advise any beach loving pilots to go!!

Cape Hatteras and Ocracoke beaches were rated #1 in the WORLD last year.

Connie and I camped so I can't vouch for the hotels but the environment is great. Clean, no pollution, great fishing, hunting, wildlife, parks and the beaches are not crowded.

We packed light and had a great time. Make sure any tent you bring can handle strong winds and bring some bug spray.

Flying around was fantastic. It was windy but.. we are gyro people! The winds did not concern me nearly as much as flying over rough terrain.

The roads would be easy to land on ( I think they might have been designed for that purpose). Whenever an electric line goes across the road they had visible balls mounted on the wires.

The beach would be very easy to land on except for people of course. Thankfully the beaches are not very crowded.

I would not want to fly over the inner coastline because that side has the swamps and dunes without a twin engine aircraft with aircraft engines.

I would feel comfortable trailering in a single place gyro that can do a good stop-n-drop landing in 1 or 2 feet of water. You could fly over most of the coast safely (assuming you are willing to fly up to 3 or 4 thousand feet to cross over hazardous terrain from time to time...

Lots of pilot interest points also. Billy Mitchel's filed, Wright Bros and more...

here for a while.

here for a while.

Tim,

I have lived here almost a dozen years yet I have a long way to go before I can claim having seen or done it all. There is so much to do, to see and experience. I am glad that it has been kept secret for so long. Front page news of Ocracoke beach being rated #1 has made some crowds but there were only a few weekends when it was off the charts. Last weekend, being labor day, one would think it was very busy but the wind made it impossible to enjoy so the brunch was cut short and no sun to soak on the beach, if you were not being pelted by sand them darn skiters went to some ninja level biting class cause in 30 mph wind the could still find you. (I think they were just getting blown of the marsh and were extra hungry from having to fly in the wind).....

Well we will see for next year maybe we can plan something and rotor up !

Flying the Outer Banks and the Eastern Shore of VA

Flying the Outer Banks and the Eastern Shore of VA

Hello Johnathon,

Angelo Manuel here. I fly in the Cape Charles area of the Eastern Shore. Alot! No one here but me now and John Mini (building his 3rd gyro and almost finished - Starbee gyro.) I use to keep gyro in Suffolk, VA. I go the outer banks alot with family. Would love to come out there and fly with others in the area at first flight and cruise the beachfront. I hold private pilot in gyro and current with machine and licenses. The eastern shore is beautiful but would be grand to fly where it all started. Give me a call or email me. Also, keep in mind maybe you and others could come out to the Eastern Shore. Beautiful beach flying, lots of grass strips and fantastic weather. Accomodations are not problem at our farm for a few families to enjoy area and do some flying. Gryos can stay at the grass strip I use or in the hanger on my property. Look forward to hearing from you. Thank's, Angelo

Angelo, nice to meet you. I use to live in Cheriton Va. I really hated when we moved away. my Dad before he passed away was a preacher and he preached at Cheriton baptist church. do the crop dusters still fly from that grass strip right there at cherrystone camp ground?

also whats going on at the Accomack county airport now days? man that was a nice wide and long runway to learn from. I use to fly there with the C.A.P. sqd. 45043 at the time we flew a Piper Super Cub. we where one of the last CAP sqd. to fly the Super cubs. most the others had Cessana 172's

anyway fly safe, and if you can post some pics for your area.

Tim,

Your pic of the Kitty Hawk monument reminded me of Ken Brock's cross country from Ca. in ????. I forget what year it was but the PRA Mag had a pic of him flying at the monument. Have you seen that pic?!

Cheers :)
