Tim,
I tried with Chapter 13 members to organize an Outer Banks Fly OUT ! No one wanted to go even the local pilots dropped out at the last min. It is a great place to vacation and we are planning on going back there in October. Prior to the peak $eason kicking in. Rates go thru the roof then. You can vacation any way you want from RV parks across from the surf to expensive motels.
Since you and Connie know what a great place it is now maybe those who are lurking might want to make it next year when we plan the 08 trip. Katherine and I packed light and flew there from [bayboro international 7NC0] with a stop at plymouth. It was about a 2 hour flight to Manteo, KMQI.

Jonathan,
I can tell you that it was a GREAT time. I travel alot for work and for pleasure and thus have been to populated and rural coasts.
I would advise any beach loving pilots to go!!
Cape Hatteras and Ocracoke beaches were rated #1 in the WORLD last year.
Connie and I camped so I can't vouch for the hotels but the environment is great. Clean, no pollution, great fishing, hunting, wildlife, parks and the beaches are not crowded.
We packed light and had a great time. Make sure any tent you bring can handle strong winds and bring some bug spray.
Flying around was fantastic. It was windy but.. we are gyro people! The winds did not concern me nearly as much as flying over rough terrain.
The roads would be easy to land on ( I think they might have been designed for that purpose). Whenever an electric line goes across the road they had visible balls mounted on the wires.
The beach would be very easy to land on except for people of course. Thankfully the beaches are not very crowded.
I would not want to fly over the inner coastline because that side has the swamps and dunes without a twin engine aircraft with aircraft engines.
I would feel comfortable trailering in a single place gyro that can do a good stop-n-drop landing in 1 or 2 feet of water. You could fly over most of the coast safely (assuming you are willing to fly up to 3 or 4 thousand feet to cross over hazardous terrain from time to time...
Lots of pilot interest points also. Billy Mitchel's filed, Wright Bros and more...
