Gyro Gerg's Mentone Awards Album

Spent the entire day Saturday with Chris Burgess. We did an hour lesson, put the blades on my gyro, then did my final sign-off at Frederick Airport. My gyro was so filthy from road grime from the trip back in the rain, I was ashamed to have anyone see it, but what the heck, it still balanced on the mains the same as always, and Chris was satisfied enough to sign off for my solo from here on out. I can't wait until I can get her back to home base and start the solo procession to get to the point where I am comfortable and confident enough to do my first trip around the pattern at Warrenton-Fauquier County Airport! Yee-HAH!!!

Brian: He is N72GB, so you can find him on the list posted somewhere here, the thread about the Gyro count at Mentone that includes every machine's N# etc. Pretty darn good comprehensive post for all the machines there!!

Back To The Mentone Awards!!!!

Back To The Mentone Awards!!!!

1st Place - Best Bombs in the Rack.

Wow, look at the cool saddle tanks! THses babies are converted Freon cannisters!!! Talk about the Mother of Invention! They will need to be kpt FULL of fuel at all times though, so they will need to be topped up after flight. Why? I think they're steel, and since they are not being charged with compressed gases anymore that are 99% pure anhydrous they are going to collect water from the air and rust if they are stored overnight empty. Not that big a deal, just do that and they should be OK, and watch the fuel filters so they don't clog with particulates. Neato! I think he should add tail fins to 'em, and paint a little red fuse nipple on the nose!!!

1 st-Place - Best Insulation on an Exhaust Pipe

1 st-Place - Best Insulation on an Exhaust Pipe

Kids - don't try this at home: We seem to be missing an intercooler!

This is a turbo conversion that includes insulated hot pipes to the pump. Yeah, that makes the turbo marginally more efficient, but why bother? Anything over 3000 rpms and you pump HOT charge air to the motor. I mean 300-400 degrees hot. On a car, this might be OK for short bursts of power, but non-stop use of hot charge intake air like this application is not cool. Pun intended. Correct me if I'm wrong and this grenade-with-the-pin-pulled has an intercooler that I missed somehow. Notice he's added an oil cooler in a misguided attempt to bring engine temps down. The problem is in the combustion chamber, not the oil sump. One of these days there's going to be a nice little hole through the dome of a piston, or a valve that's bent so bad that the cylinder quits firing. Unless these are sodium-filled valves, there could even be a broken valve through a piston. And that's just if detonation doesn't destroy the wristpins first, or collapse the rings. Don't want to listen to me? OK, why do you suppose Porsche built turbos for only 1 year w/o intercoolers, but they've been building 'em WITH intercoolers for the last 30 years?

On another note: Neato pod paint.

Air Jordan Award - Highest Jumping Jumpter Copter

Air Jordan Award - Highest Jumping Jumpter Copter

When this thing is all spooled up tighter'n a clock spring, like 400 sumpin' RRPMs, the two guys in the lawn chairs alongside of 'er grab onto the Jumpter Copter and THROW it up into the air! No kiddin. I sawr it mahsef. Seriously, this thing launches 50 feet vertical, like a Jack in the Box, like nothing you've ever seen before. Not even a regular helicopter takes off vertically like that. This thing makes a Harrier jump takeoff look like a leetel gurl, gurly man.

The Supercalifradgilisticexpealidosius Award

The Supercalifradgilisticexpealidosius Award

THis one won every cottin pickin award at the awards dinner that Greg Gremminger and What's-his-name-Sparrow-Hawk-dude didn't win. AND he earned 'em!!! I hear tell he machined every part on this Jump Gyro himself!!! Wow. Pray, tell, how do you cut all those little spirally lines on the insides of the nuts? I know, I know, he really bought the nuts and bolts, and even 3 of the washers. She takes off more gentley and civilized, like a helo, than the Jumpter Sumpter Copter Doodley Bug did. But I would have liked to watch it take off more.

THe Dominatrix Award

THe Dominatrix Award

The pilot is required to wear shiney black latex flight suits at all times in this wild and wacky jump Dominator. Just look at those tail feathers, and you'll get an idea of what this lousy photographer missed in the details of this jump gyro. These 3 one-off jump gyros were totally whack, awesome, ill, and most of all groovey.

Unanimous Decision, The Coolest Gyro...over there.

Unanimous Decision, The Coolest Gyro...over there.

Yeah it's my gyro again. But this is my thread, I'll give as many awards to me as what I want. It is here again, because I was parked next to the 3 jumpter copter whopters. Smart move, eh? Think of ALL those pics where my AC CLT one-off conversion, with all its chipped paint and hanger rash, was the back-drop! Folks, when you see that guy in the background of your precious jump gyro pics, think of me. It isn't me, cuz I was out of the hanger most of the day droolin over the flyin and the other stuff, yakkin it up with the Thai people who showed up (yes, we had people come in from Singapore and Thailand just for this Mentone show!!), but think of me. It IS my AC in the background. Look carefully at the paint-stained T-Shirt. It says "Detroit, where the weak are killed and eaten." Love those Detroiters.

Miss Mentone 2007

Miss Mentone 2007

Are you guys even interested in this mock awards thing I started? I guess I have to turn it up a notch to keep your interest in this thread. If no one responds then it dies out and I can't find it again to post more pics... so here it is, the award you've all been waiting for! And the Winner is Connie! She's easy on the eyes, really nice to talk to, her husband is quite a guy too, AND SHE FLIES GYROs !!! What else could you ask for in a Miss Mentone winner? NO, it is NOT the one in the overalls wearing the gyro beanie! Doh! It is the the one in the cammies walking the flight line!!!

Gerg,

I, for one, have enjoyed your "awards." Any reason for pictures is a good one IMHO.

The John Deere Combine Award

The John Deere Combine Award

The story goes that Debbie was hungry and Steve was still flyin'. He felt bad she missed din-din so he flew down low, picked a peck of corn, and did an ear drop on the flight line. She responded with cooing and back rubbies later. Just bringin home the bacon, darlin'. There was some alfalpha stuck to his landing lights that I noticed when I took this shot.

Keep the awards coming. I will have to disagree with your Best Bensen type award though. I think Gary Goldsberry's wins that one by a long shot.

Tim

Post #3 is Gary's, Best Air Show and Best Bensen or Bensen Knock-off, and post 26 wins a prize for the Bensen who flew in, not trailered.

More to come!

1st Place - Best Tail Graphics. Honorable Mention - Best Paint job by a fuel cell

1st Place - Best Tail Graphics. Honorable Mention - Best Paint job by a fuel cell

When you open this photo up to full size, you'll see Ron Awad's checkered tail is really cool. I liked it so I decided to see what a take-off on that design might look like in yellow on red. It was 2:00 AM, I was the last man standing in the hanger (the cooler was empty, too - I wasn't doing any flying at all at Mentone, you know), and applied yellow vinyl stripes to my own MTG Tandem. If you look closely, will you see the results of my handywork on the last tail on the upper right of the photo here! Next morning, (now sober of course) I decided it looked kinda shabby where all the strips of tape overlapped each other towards the leading edge, and tried to remove the tape. IT REMOVED THE PAINT! so I am stuck with my lousy vinyl job for a while. But, standing back away from it a ways, it does look pretty cool anyway.

As to the second award here, Ron's fuel cell decided to do some decorating all on its own that day. A dry grommet leaked fuel and stripped his nice orange paint job from the cluster plate. My suggestion was to finish stripping the plates, shine 'em up, and leave it like that, since the rest of the paint remained intact! I don't think anybody ever listens to me though.

Best Air Command Tandem

Best Air Command Tandem

Nice machine. You may wonder why I didn't give myself this award? I'm totally fair and honest! But, really, I don't own an Air Command anything! I got mine registered, and certified at Mentone, as a "Mills Gregory T, Tandem" so, now I just call it a "MGT Tandem". Compare this frame to mine to see the differences, which are numerous. I wanted this fellow to give me ride, but never figured out who he was amongst the crowd. Darn. It would have been nice to compare this ship to mine in flight. Maybe someone else will trade rides with me next year, since I will be OK to fly at Mentone then.
