Rotax 912 or 912S is what I would like to be flying. Expensive to buy but doesn't need much attention after for a LONG LONG time!

If you make sure everything bolted to the engine and needed for that engine to run - radiator system, ignition, Re drive, etc... - is properly installed and in great shape, then I think the Subaru is a great engine... Especially for the price you pay to put one together and even better is the low price for replacement parts.

Also if your going to be flying a small single seater I think you can't beat a two stroke Rotax for cost and power to weight. I know most folks don't care for two strokes but I like the fact that Rotax is designed to be used for aviation and they have the bugs worked out of their product. If you give it respect and good treatment, they are VERY dependable. Knock on wood, but I have well over 600 hours flying two stroke Rotax engines and I have not had the first engine out yet. And I have not been the best at giving them good treatment either.

I've used the Rotax 503 on my gyro's and planes and have never had a problem. As Ron said, depending on the machine you're going to build will depend on which engine.

I'm at 3,500 ft and weigh about 210 so I needed some power. The 503 treated me very very well.

Now if you are a heavy guy and want the feel of power and a peace in mind (and have the money) get a lycoming. I have flown with 62 HP, 80 HP, 180hp and 200 HP. And I am adicted to power.

Now I play more with the single seat 62 hp machine is my "hot rod"
