VIDEO - A vertical approach to a landing at Santa Ynez Airport...

Santa Ynex airport in Santa Barbara County is a very nice airfield.

Before there were Native American Casinos, many of the tribes and reservations they lived on were economically depressed. Every Thanksgiving, a large group of aircraft owners including myself would fly donated food and clothing to airports that were close to various Reservations all over the Southwest. Santa Ynez airport was used for the Chumash Tribe.

Peter, times have changed.

At our annual Santa Clarita Veterans Day celebration, I met a gentleman, a Vietnam Vet that is from the Chumash Tribe (he's now one of the elders). Twice during conversation he kept saying I look familiar to him. He told me that he's Chumash and I mentioned to him about the Thanksgiving flights of donated food and clothing I used to fly to Santa Ynez for the Chumash Reservation around 40 years previously. Bingo! He then said, "I remember, you had a little red and white airplane! You had the smallest airplane but seemed to always carry the most supplies." The back seat area could carry 340 lb (two FAA standard 170 lb passengers). The plane had 844 lbs of useful load.
