Hi Jim
The engine is built for wagtail with bespoke knock sensors and ECU we assemble the power plants in a temperature controlled environment and test it thoroughly
The ECU is built and developed by our in house technicians Wagtail has the only temperature controlled engine assembly facility for Gyroplanes in Africa
1) bigger piston to wall clearance
2) tri metal racing bearings
3) bespoke valve seat set for improved cooling
4) higher than normal oil pressures to aid cooling
5) dual independent crank signal pickups
6j bigger oil coolers and radiator set up
7) two manifold pressure sensors
8) 2 x independent engine management units
9) automated monitoring between the two ECU’s for auto switch if an error develops with one while in the air
10) engine Rpm IS 4000/4300 at cruise 37-50% power
11) on high 280 Hp and up we run forged pistons some of our units deliver reliable 320 Hp

lots of other small things … we don’t drop in a vehicle engine and hope for the best😳🤔 our prime mover is built for aviation and has been proven in hot high and harsh conditions

We have thousands of hours of R&D with these engines and it’s associated components

We will have a Triojan Test Pilot and instructor available in Texas towards the middle of the year as well, we will soon be able to offer kits with or without builder assist

Hi Greg,

Thanks for the info. I wasn't familiar with the 'bespoke" term. Now I understand it means "custom made for."

I'm glad to hear you're coming to Texas. I'd love to see one of these beasts in person. "Middle of the year" here will certainly put you're cooling system to the test.

I will not be there one of our other instructors is coming with the focus on crop spraying using our Gyroplane platforms

I thought crop spraying was not allowed by the FAA in experimental amateur built gyroplanes because it violated the operating limitation.

How are you going to manage that limitation?

How long does it take to learn to do crop spraying in a gyroplane?

Which operating limitation are you thinking of Vance?

Hi Vance
your welcome to interact with that issue on our website contact form, we are the only commercial Gyroplane operation in Africa, we also supply high powered gyroplanes in various African countries for anti poaching and other law enforcement tasks.
As far as crop spraying goes it falls under part 96 and then there is the issue of the P licence and hours.

Our pilot is in fact coming to Texas where he will be doing Helicopter crop spraying and then hoping to interact with interested parties regarding gyroplanes with a view to grow the footprint for the larger Gyroplane that can comfortably accommodate guys who traditionally are to large for the standard type of craft.
Like in the pick up world you get the small Toyota …then also get the Ford F250 for men who just need bigger ….think of our Gyroplane like that and as one poster above commented we are not concerned with hot and high conditions 😁

And if the Gyroplane is type certified and supplied built ? And it’s not flown on a LSA licence ?

It appears to me a standard category aircraft may be used for commercial purposes.

It appears to me a commercial pilot certificate is required to fly for compensation or hire such as crop dusting.

Note the purpose in section A of the attached AWC. There is nothing that precludes aerial application on your property.

Greg,

Is Wagtail continuing to develop the Kriek MK II or the Springkaan?

Both look really good to me.

Jim

Many fixed wing aerial applicator aircraft are operated in Restricted category.

Type certificates from other nations are only accepted under JAR 22 et seq for standard airworthiness, so far as I know. Standard airworthiness approval directly through FAA would cost tens of millions and may not be approved with a fixed collective teetering rotor.

Squeezing it into Primary will be an uneasy fit because the stated purpose of that category is personal, pleasure use. Spraying is not transporting persons or property for hire, but FAA might tighten the rules up about other uses if a commercial gyro operator arouses their ire.

This doesn't apply if one owns their own EAB gyroplane and uses the aircraft themselves for crop dusting over their own land.

Hi Wayne,

First, the "purpose" for which the certificate is issued is "Operating amateur built aircraft." For fun or for ag ops, is not relevant.

Secondly, as JR points out, ag ops are not carrying persons or property for hire.

Can I build an EAB gyro and start an ag ops business? No. Can I use that aircraft to conduct ag ops for myself? Yes.
