Many of us have hurdles to overcome and hoops to jump through.
I only started when I found a good offer on an MTO Sport. On Facebook, of all places...
In 2017 I rented an MTO Sport in Sweden to be on an island hopping tour. So I knew what I got into.
I live on a small island in the Baltic Sea - quite a way off the rest of Denmark.
After wasting time with one CFI, who dented my old aluminum Type1rotor, I ended up with a Polish carbon fiber rotor instead.
The propeller was not in good shape, so I found one in Ukraine. Works fine and was even cheap.
The radio became obsolete then, so that was another expense. I did some overdue maintenance, fabricated some parts myself
and made some repairs. But I now have a trainer aircraft with great performance (914 engine).
I was lucky to get another instructor even farther away. We are few in this country, we are now 31 certified pilots only!
To get instruction I have had to drive across Denmark, using one ferry and two bridges or alternatively two ferries and one bridge.
Salary for the instructor, gasoline and very expensive insurance (like I was a new teenage driver with a new car).
Some prople live near an airport with gyros and some do not. One of our members always seem to get everything cheaply,
but it varies for the rest of us. I had to take on a job to cover some of the costs - but it has now paid off.
Just to take my skill test will cost me close to $1000 (two gyros, flight of me and instructor, test and Danish FAA), because of where I live.
And I'm not really whining - because I've wanted a gyro since I saw "You only live twice" - when I was 10 years old.
It just took some time to get around to it...
Cheers
Erik
