In my email this morning from an old airline friend.
Both been bush pilots in East Africa and then in the same airline before it folded. We had hunted together, drunk together, flown together and kept in touch over the years. Thought I'd share it.

Aviators

Once the wings go on, they never come off, whether seen, or not.Fused to the soul through adversity, fear and adrenaline.

No one who has ever worn them with pride and integrity, can ever sleep through that `call of the wild ` that wafts through bedroom windows in the deep of the night.

When a good aviator leaves the `job' and retires, many are jealous, some pleased, yet others, who have already retired, wonder.Wonder if he knows what he is leaving behind, because they already know.

Know, that after a lifetime of a camaraderie that few experience, it will remain as a deep longing for those past times.

Know in the world of flying, there is a fellowship which lasts long after flight suits, briefcases, earphones are hung up in the back of the closet.

Know even if thrown away, they will be on him with every step and breath that remains in his life.

Know how the very bearing of the man speaks of what he was and in his heart still is.

And because he, we, flew, envy no man on earth.

Thank you for sharing!

Thank you for sharing!

You are a quality guy with some cool friends Leigh.

I learn a lot about ways to communicate the mysterious passion of the sky from you and find great joy in our friendship.

I cannot imagine what it is like to be a professional pilot with your experience and insight.

I am proud to know you.

Thank you, Vance

Retirement

The free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wings
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with fearful trill
of the things unknown
but longed for still
and is tune is heard
on the distant hill for the caged bird
sings of freedom

The free bird thinks of another breeze
an the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.
