Our generous friend Dave Seace, has a Subaru problem.
Dave is nearing completion of a 2 place Dominator/Subaru bird.
He is trying to make it spark, using an ignition box offered by RAF as
standard equipment on the carbureted 2.2 installation. He called me today, looking for a wiring schematic, and any advice to make it go "VROOM".
Anyone have knowledge of this system, and a schematic? I have not seen
the 'module' he is trying to use, but Dave described it as custom made by RAF. Thanks in advance, Mike.

Hey Mike, if it's what I'm thinking of (little small flat boxy thing with a connector on one side)...its called an ignitor and it's specially ordered from RAF in SA. Dofin had to order Tony one in Tampa and it took quite a while to get in. Is that what you are talking about? I'll take a pic of mine when i get home and post it. What do you mean by schematic for wiring? Like how the harness is set up? Let me know and maybe I can help.

FWIW, I had two of those RAF units fail before I even taxiied. I would not trust that unit at all. RAF would not admit it BUT a lot of those units failed, one writing off a lovely RAF. When Ken J asked on the forum we found that lots had failed.

If I remember correctly the box of electronics was sealed with an acidic silicone that corroded the components. I was shocked when I pulled the second one RAF had sent me apart!!!!!!!!!!!

Aaah, Thank You Paul. Thats good to know, and I will pass that on. Dave is looking for an alternative to using the automotive computer and wiring.

I found it best and less complicated to use an aftermarket ECU with sensor connections and programming suitable for the Subaru. I mostly used Motec. Others down here use Wolf and others including the NZ Link.

Would throw a plug in here for the Microsquirt ECU. So far have been real happy with what I have found on mine except for the one bad programming connector (a mini jack) .

Am at the point of programming mine (well not me but my computer whiz heighboor) but as for the last few days it is HOT even at nite right now at almost l0:00 pm it is 98 outside. They are comming out with the latest version by the end of this month (under $400 less connectors for the sensors) The unit is totally assembled and has a short (30 inch) cable pre-wired with it. It can be programmed to run a full EFI V-8 or a single cylinder carbureted engine. It can be set up for Full EFI or fuel control only or ignition control only. If you have a EFI style Subie, that has been set up for carbs, then you probably already have the tooth/timing wheel on the crank and the associated sensor. For ignition control I think all you would need is crank sensing, cam sensing and a coil pack for "wasted spark" set up. You can go to www.diyautotune.com and start researching. You can also go to the "engine" thread and look at some of the pics that I have posted under "Weber 750 engine" and the thread on the Microsquirt wiring.
