Anyone have any comment about the engine offered by Starbee? The MZ201m? It seems to produce about the same HP as a Rotax 503 at a much lighter weight. Anyone with experience with the Zanoretta MZ line of engines? Any pros? Any cons? Rumors? Loose talk? Insinuations?

Brent Brown has one on one of his machines. Also they use them on the Mosquito ultralight helicopter

We use the 202 not the 201. I would not try the 201 with the one carb and belt brive. My 202 with 2 bings and gear drive is as light or lighter than the 503.
If I was ever to buy a new motor in the 50 to 60 hp range the MZ202 would be it. I flew it today just to play around and it is doing fine.

I just pulled up a website on the MZ202... it states 82lbs with the gearbox and muffler... still lighter than the 503??

If you take a look at the Starbee site, the MZ201m has been upgraded to a dual carb configuration, more carb more horses (52 HP).

I was asking more in the terms of reliability, factory support, etc...Wanting to know if they are a reliable/durable engine...not like that "other" engine that, I have been told, pukes sparkplugs and overheats (No, not the Rotax line of engines).

Weighing less, does this mean the MZ201m uses less substantial parts in critical areas? Does the engine have to work harder? Is the belt redrive reliable? What's the comparative fuel consumption?....I'm still a newbie at this and sage advise from the old vets is appreciated.

I have not done the research myself, & now I am really confused.

Could someone please explain. What are the displacements of the MZ engines? What are the differences of the MZ's?

Is it lighter than a 503? The one that was on the Starbee that could not hardly get off the ground was the 1 carb version. It was supposed to be 40HP like the 447 yet it could only turn the same prop with 11 degrees pitch as compared to 13 with the 447.

Supposedly if you stick on another carb it goes to 65 HP.?

What is the truth here?

this is the web site.
The 202 and 201 use the same case and cylinders. so if you want to add the fan, two carbs and gearbox you have a 202. both have 627cc.
I set my max rpm at 5800.
fly at 45mph at 5200
50 to 1 synthetic oil only$$$$.
you need to add the batt. weight to it you can't start the 202 without it. still under 100 pounds with batt and powerfin prop.
My motor was ported and I run it with the R&D pipe this is a 60 HP at 5800 and 60 pounds torque at 5250.
R&D no longer deals this motor but you can still get the pipe. He said they wouldn't give him a deal and wanted him to have $50000 on hand at all times.

never herd of MZ puking plugs but I was e mailed by a guy who overheated his. I think he had trouble reading or making the needed jet changes.

I just change jets to keep it cool like I did with all my motors.

You should go to the factory web site at www.compactradialengines.com for complete info on the MZ engines. They've been a great engine for the Mosquito. The MZ 201 is a derated MZ202 that runs at 4700 rpm, has no cooling fan and produces 40 hp. The MZ202 has a cooling fan, runs at 6000 rpm and produces 60 hp (actually more like 55 hp unless you get a tuned exhaust option).

A find of my has the MZ202 with the belt drive instead of the gear box. ON an gyro bee air frame,m that weight I think is around 77 pounds. Taht is what the factory email me about the configuration.

The gearbox weighs 20 lbs, and the belt redrive 7lbs.
The belt redrive and the special 2 carb 201 are not on the website, they are specialy built for starbee.

Hirths only puke spark plugs if you don't torque them properly. What self respecting aircraft owner doesn't use a torque wrench?

Or buy a used 503 and send it to Me and I will rebuild it for you and test run it!

Scott, I've been searching around for a cheap used 503. If I ever get my hands on one, how much would you charge for a rebuild and test run?

Jim, I usually will charge $400+parts and $125 for a break in run on a 503. SO......depending on parts you can end up spending $150-$1800 depending on what the engine needs.
Rotax is very proud of thier parts, so is Hirth, and I would imagine MZ also.
Just remember: Good parts aren't cheap, and cheap parts aren't good.

There are a couple of engines on Ebay right now.

REDHORSE: Hey there, Charlie. How's it going these days? I met you over in Olney, TX, a couple of months ago under the Air Command tent.

Ed in Columbus

one thing about Rotax 503 that alot of people don't know is this is a popular snowmobile engine as well, and there is alot of parts that are totally interchangeable between the sled and aircraft versions of the 503. If you buy the sled version of the parts the price is about half of the aircraft version.

Ed, I don't know the guy, but the person who listed that 503 on Barnstormers always has a bunch of stuff for sale on there.
