Hi there, I am an airplane and helicopter CFI. I am potentially looking to add a sport cfi gyroplane to my certificate (mainly due to a lack of DPEs in the area).

I’m browsing through the regulations and am confused on whether I need to take a written test or not. I am thinking that I do not need a written test and I need a sign off from two instructors. Is that correct?

Hello HeloCFI, we are located in Dickson Tn (M02)
Popular Rotorcraft Association Chapter #16 is based here.
Our next meeting is next month. September 14th at 10:00am in the terminal Building at the Dickson Airport.
We would enjoy meeting you.

As I read the regs, you will need underlying privileges for the gyroplane class (commercial for Part H CFI, or Sport privileges for Part K CFI) before seeking CFI privileges.

§61.63 (c)(4) would exempt you from the knowledge test for add-on commercial privileges. The interaction of this provision with the Sport Pilot rules is a bit obscure, but using a bit of logic (always dangerous when reading the FARs) you should likewise be exempt for the lesser Sport privileges.

There is no minimum flight time requirements for SP add on in your situation. Basically demonstrate to a recommending CFI your proficiency to fly the aircraft. Then take a proficiency check ride with another CFI.

Note. The 8710-11 paper copy has to be filled out by both CFI's and mailed in. This form is not available to be completed online.

61.411 (c) lists the flight time requirements for Sport Pilot CFI.

You first need to add Sport Pilot privilege for Gyroplane class using 2 Gyroplane CFI (one recommending and one giving the checkride) and 8710-11 form. Then you can add SP-CFI in gyroplane using 2 Gyroplane CFI, one recommending and one giving the checkride again using 8710-11 form. No written or DPE is needed in this case and there is no minimum training times required.

You can also add Gyroplane class to your Rotorcraft category rating by using a DPE to your private pilot license and go that route if you want to.
