Rudder pedal linkages

Hi Brian,
nice! I had an email exchange with Dana, who tells me the reason they use a longer block is they're using 0.250 angle for the bracket. (Presumably to counteract the bending mentioned in another thread.) They're going to forward pictures of the setup. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it resembles your work-up.
cheers,
John
Yes, please post any info and pix you can obtain from Dana/StarBee. I checked their site for information about this, including their forum, but to no avail. Seems like they'd have some kind of documentation or write-up about how to implement the new noseblock, especially since so many of us are scratch-builders relying on Ralph's plans. I do hope they continue to manufacture the stock Taggart design as well.

Thanks John,
Brian

Brian, I'm sorry I can't be of much help because as you know, my front end is quite modified. But I basically went through the same trial and error scenario trying to get the geometry correct. Even though I did not use the stock front end, I did incorporate a control horn and it at least uses the whole pattern from Ralph's. And yes, I did make the pedal mounting bracket a little wider. One again, I am going to return to a stock "Brock" set up something like the picture I've attached. Simple is beautiful.

Hey Guys,
I have the complete Starbee's front end set up....the bottom brace for me is not flush, sticks about 1/8 forward. Just measured rudder horn movement get an easy 40
degrees back n forth. Sorry don't have digital to take pics... Hope this helps some:)
later all.

Tonight I rebuilt the main pedal bracket. It is now 1/2" wider, placing the pedal extensions 1/4" further outboard to better align the linkages. I've also incorporated Brian's most elegant design (thank you!) (see above), which moves the pedals back to their correct location; improves the linkage alignment further still, and adds reinforcement.

Hey, that turned out nice. You really do some outstanding work my friend. How does it feel in terms of rigidity and deflection? I debated on designing a union hole at the midpoint between the pivot bracket holes, but ditched it in favor of letting the 18" bracket flex minutely rather than rigidly prying up on the forward holes (which are now at a 1" longer moment arm).

Let us know how that works out. An added benefit is that it's only about half the weight penalty of doubling the bracket thickness (1/8 to 1/4")... the Offset Bracket doesn't really need to span the entire length of the pedal bracket since the bending load is concentrated at the midpoint.

I'd still get Ralph's input on this before flying it! I don't know enough about aircraft design to say for certain I've thought of everything.

I've been following your site with some regularity, and am a fan of your quality workmanship and attention to detail. :)

Respectfully,
Brian Jackson

Edit: P.S. Holy crap, I'm at 1500 posts??? I'd better shut up and do more listening! After all, God gave us 2 ears and only 1 mouth for a reason :D

Way I see it, it's at least as strong as the existing design. One thing I am contemplating is using a couple of pieces of angle either side of the nose block, fastened with a single bolt running laterally through the block, to act as additional fixing brackets. But then again, the only issue people have had is that the bracket bent, not problems with the strength of the mounting.
And your strut should nix the bend issue. Shall meditate on it. Ommmm.

Hehe - keep up the posting; but (and only a friend would tell you this) your new avatar gives me the screaming willies. :D

cheers,
John

Naa, grab the cans and adjust your E-meter dials :D (sorry... $cientology joke)

Would you believe it's a self portrait of my last Gyro ride at Mentone '04 ? Actually I just got bored with the old one, which was the album cover to one of my favorite albums of all time: RUSH - Signals. Bonus points to anyone who knows what album cover my current avatar is from. Double bonus points to anyone whom actually bought a copy :) . Triple bonus if you remember what an "album" was :D

We have a winner!!! Man, that song "Epitaph" still gives me chills. Funny thing is my dad bought me that album when I was 4 (in 1969). Musta been a weening thing for musicians ;)

Sorry to get off-topic. Now where were we?
