What is going to replace the 582 as the "Go to" engine in the 65 HP range?

I keep hoping for an 80 hp 4 stroke with same all up weight.....Yamaha are you listening?
Also since were in dreamsville, can you make it the same shape and psru as the 582 so I can just drop in in?
Thank you

I spoke w/ Teal Jenkins (of SkyTraxUSA.com) recently. He has developed one of his gearboxes to mate up w/ the Yamaha 2 cylinder, 80 hp sled engine. https://www.skytraxusa.com/new-page-2 https://www.skytraxusa.com/new-page-2
His gearbox claims 80-120 hp range.

Likely not a drop-in replacement for the 582, but appears to be less than the 582 @ 100#, counting gearbox) for weight & in the ballpark for dimensions (19" length, counting the gearbox). That website has several closeup photos of engine & GB.

Has the additional 15 hp, as well as being a 4 stroke (better fuel economy), AND
priced much less than what Rotax charges, due to Yamaha's mass production.
The Skytrax prop flange matches Rotax's 912 & 2 stroke prop flanges.

Skytrax also offers a SS exhaust system (w/ O2 sensor bung, if needed) & air filter assembly that utilizes a common auto parts filter.

Rotax having discontinued the 582 engine (though still available), as well as the "C" gearbox, doesn't stack up too well...

Heard or read somewhere Yamaha themselves are developing a line of engines for Aviation use. Would love to see this. If they or Honda could put an end to the Rotax monopoly it would be awesome.

What about the Jabiru 2200, has anyone tried one in a pusher configuration, one of my flying buddies has one on his X air and it seems to have lots of power (80 HP) and no gearbox required.

Free air engines don’t do well on gyros. Dad had a few and they were always right on the edge of overheating. I also heard their horses are ponies not horses. Austrian horses seem to be Clydesdales and everyone else’s are much smaller. I mean that a 80 HP Rotax I would be willing to bet is much stronger than a 80HP anything else.

Viking 90 is fatter but they have hours on it now.
Viking has several engines. Dad put quite a few 110’s on machines. Joe Pires not sure of spelling) has a 130 on his machine. He has a couple of problems with the gear box in the beginning but they have been solved.

I would love even more if there was an electric conversion. It would cut down on a ton of maintenance.
Heck all I use is about an hour or so of flight time...I would think it possible by now.

Lots on the old forum on Jabiru. Seemed to have a lot of cooling issues.

When Rotax made the announcement last year that they would discontinue the 582, I happened to be reading a book called The Innovator's Dilemma by Christensen. It seemed like the Rotax decision fit perfectly into the pattern of inevitable "up market" drift of successful companies, driven by increasing cost structure and other factors.

This drift causes problems for consumers seeking affordable down-market products, but it also creates opportunities. The void can create room for disruption, although in this case it is hard to view that as likely. Especially given the limited numbers of down-market customers, the proliferation of used motors that can be overhauled, the general bias against two-strokes, the difficulty of scaling up a new engine brand and support network, and the apparent absence of a new technology ready to step in.

As far as new technologies, I think will be decades before all-electric can step in the gap, at least for rotary-wing. Seems like it is about right for motor gliders now. Hybrid-electric may disrupt the higher end of the market. There is much more money in the 160+ hp range to support such innovation. It's hard to envision much investment in the 65-80 hp pusher market.

Still, it is possible that the gap could be filled by an adaptation of a recreational engine as suggested above. If someone is really dedicated to the project and willing to keep their cost structure low, they may find enough demand to make a good design work and sustain a steady business. But we have to admit, it is truly exceptional when exceptional folks choose to remain down-market. It would be great if Yamaha went after this market, but it would seem almost too good to be true. Aeromarine has some neat ideas, but I can't help wondering if he is too distracted by all his cool inventions to focus on any one.

I will be building the 65hp 582,s, the 75hp 612 Big Bore , the 85hp 612 Rave & the 92hp 670 Rave for years to come. The 612 series use a 582 engine & we have a kit to take it from 76mm to 78mm. We have been building the 612's for 2 years now & have 75 flying without a single warranty issue. In the 2 years we only had 3 customers that wanted to stay with the stock 582. We also built only 5 of the 670 engines in the 2 years. To completely overhaul the 582 & install the rods to work with the 78mm 670 piston is $2850 ( All the engine overhauls from the 447 to the 670 is $2850 to have them completely overhauled ) The 612 Big Bore 75hp kit adds only $575 to the overhaul fee & uses the stock 582 exhaust. To go to the 85hp 612 Rave is $1075 & it requires my / CPI custom Rave exhaust system thats $780. We do have a exhaust that will take the 612 Rave to 110 hp. My mechanic runs one on his Airboat & has the redline at 8200 rpm. The 612 Rave & 670 Rave will save you 1gph in gas with the longer power stroke. We can get the Ducati Dual Ignition from Ducati & the Bing 54 carbs from Bing. We really do not use anything from Rotax so it has no effect on my engines. We will be building & overhauling all the Rotax 2 strokes for years to come !!!!!!!

I like the 110 Viking, it is a little heavy but has great power. Jumps off the ground and climbs well. The 130 Viking would make a great single place power plant

I just need a 582 (standard) engine rebuilt. I have the rebuild kit from Rotax with me. Are you still in Naples Rick.
If so, give me a quick ring so I can discuss (813)-786-8290
It is for a bush trike.
