I was surprised to see no reaction to my post last night so started a new thread for you to see the result.
I won't have time to do this during the weekend so here is the complete answer to the mystery. Thom got it just about right so next time you're in France Thom let me know and I'll take you flying as promised.
Ivan Connary got it just about dead right so he also wins a trip to see this.

The bits of film aren't too good but you can see the site.

I'm really not a computer person I just wanted to see if I could manage to insert a photo in my post like others seem to do.

It's a V1 flying bomb on it's launching rail. In fact about two thirds of the rail is missing.
They have created a sort of museum at the site with explanations about how this launch site was operated.
Having looked for it and found it with difficulty in my gyro at slow speed and low level I really admire the WWII pilots who found this sort of site at 300+ kts with Germans shooting at them. They were a different breed of pilot.

Thanks for posting the photos. My grandfather was in WWII. He was even in the Battle of the Bulge. He was not in Bastogne. But he was not to far from it. At lest looking at a map. It is hard do believe that country side we look at as being so beautiful had so much danger back then.

Thank You
Scott

The V2 was launched like the rockets of today. Vertically.. Those V1 were launched from a rail kinda like the wright brothers since the bomb had no wheels.

The buzz bomb at the townhall in Greencastle? I went by the other day and it was gone. Looks like repairs were going on.

JR,
You said a gun not a rocket. Big difference.

There's a nice museum in Bastogne. Been there several times.

Tim, you are partially correct, but not completely. ;) The V1 was not a true rocket, but rather a pulse jet. They were catapult launched.

JR, there actually was a gun capapable of fireing huge projectiles across the channel deep into England. It was called the "Pump Gun" due to the sequential firing chambers along the barrel to continue accelerating the projectile to some horrendous velocity prior to exiting the muzzle.

I have a book around here somewhere that gives some rather astounding stats on this weapon. If I can find it, I will post some of them later.

A pulse-jet flying bomb is still not what I'd categorize as a gun. An F-18 is catapult launched also. I wouldn't call it a gun either.

Didn't say it was! Merely pointed out that there was such a gun as JR mentioned, and the buzz bomb was not a rocket.
