original design tractor gyro
Life circumstances have led me to the decision to get out of flying and move on to other interests.
My recent engine out has brought forward my fears about flying; I’ve known 3 guys that died in gyros, and another friend got hurt really bad in a fixed wing crash.
I’ve never felt like a natural pilot, and though I get moments of extreme joy while flying, I also spend a good deal of the time being stressed out.
It’s a 30 minute drive to the airport and I don’t really get to fly that much, and I could really use the money from selling my gyro for other needs right now.
All this adds up to this decision; I’ll miss it a lot, and may come back to it some day. I’ve had a fascination with rotorcraft for 40 years and I doubt it will just go away.

I’ve decided to part out my gyro and destroy the fuselage, so here’s a list of what’s for sale.
I’d like to sell the engine before I take off the prop and engine gauges, that way I can start it up and show someone how it runs.

I’d rather take payments through PayPal ([email protected]) or cash if pickup or delivery. All prices include shipping to lower 48 except engine and blades; I’d rather not try to ship these items, if interested contact me and we can talk pickup or delivery.

Forum PM is good too.

Engine: $2,350: 200 hours Sold!
Rotax 582 blue head, pull start, purchased May ‘04, includes the following:
C gearbox, 3.47 to 1
RK400 centrifugal clutch (also original coupler)
Stock carbs and airfilter
Part of a dual-carb intake silencer kit (the big black box and airfilter)
Exhaust, silver ceramic coating, with CPS ball type joint kit
Aluminum radiator (I think it fits a Civic)
Rotax coolant reservoir
Comes with throttle/choke quadrant and dual cables; and plunger type primer.
Fuel pump (less than 10 hours)
Gas collator
Selection of spare carb jets
Charging system regulator

First 5 hours run on Valvoline 2 cycle oil; I didn’t like it (smokey), since then it’s only been run on Blue Marble oil.

I’ve moved twice in the last year and have lost my engine/airframe log book, so I can’t show you records. The only engine-out it’s ever had is described on this thread.

About 75 hours ago the front crank seal started leaking (oil dripping from the seal). To properly replace the seal would have required the crankcase to be split because the Rotax seal has a raised ridge in the middle of the outer edge that fits in a groove in the seal wall in the crankcase halves. I didn’t want to remove the engine and split the case so I figured I’d try a shortcut and if it didn’t work then I’d split the case.
I trimmed the ridge off the seal and installed it in the crankcase like you would an automotive crank seal. I put silicone sealer around the seal. It was slightly crooked when I got through, but since then there have been no leaks, so it seems to have worked.

You can see in the pics there is a little visible carbon buildup; no scratches on the piston skirts and you can still see the cross hatch on the cylinder walls.
The top rings did seem to be a little stuck; I could see sort of a black goo deposit on the bottom side of the rings. They move a little when pressed lightly with a screw driver, but they don’t seem totally free.
I’m guessing this is because I tend to jet it towards the cool side; 1000-1100, thinking I’d rather have stuck rings than a seized engine. And depending on which runway I use I sometimes have to taxi a mile to and from the hangar at a high idle and I’ve only flown about 50 hours a year. I think I’ve got it priced low enough for someone to have the top end cleaned up and still have a good deal.

The engine runs good. I can start it up for anyone who wants to see and hear it.

I’d rather not try to ship the engine and accessories; if interested contact me and we can talk pickup or delivery.

Can I be the first of probably many to tell you that I wish you would not sell the gyro....?

I understand the fears, I understand the doubts. But face it, a engine out should never result in a death. Rather than sell your stuff for pennys on the dollar and destroy the work of art that your gyro is, pickle it and sit on it for a year, meanwhile save up a few bucks here and there and send off the engine in a year for a overhaul, give yourself more peace of mind, then fly it. You are one of the best guys around here and your machine is a one of a kind work of art, I feel privledged to have been able to have flown it.

Michael,
I feel the same as Ron, take a break and think about it... this is your dream we are talking about here.
I sent you a PM saying that I would buy a couple of the things you have listed but if you decide to change your mind and hold on to everything while you think about it that is OK with me, no harm done.
The choice is yours and you can have all the time in eternity to think about it if you want to.

Intake silencer

Intake silencer

I'm interested in the silencer system and would liketo know if it is availible seperetly and how much

Andy

I agree. It is like here in ILL. you have to wait 72hours before you can buy a pistol I guess they call this cool down time. Don't sell yet. Take time and cool down you can always sell someday.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I slept on it and I still think this is the way I need to go right now. I can see me building another one someday.

Racer's got dibs on the wheels/brakes and stobe.
Someone has spoken for the engine, prerotator, and gauges.

Andy, I listed the silencer with the engine, and since someone has spoken for the engine deal I think I need to keep it with the engine.

Thanks guys,

Michael

I’ve decided to part out my gyro and destroy the fuselage,

man I hate to hear you are going to destroy the Fuselage, that has always been a very nicely built tractor gyro. and from the Videos I have seen of it looks to fly very well.

good luck in your future ventures.

Hey Tim,

Ron suggested donating the fuselage to the PRA museum; that's sounding pretty good to me right now, or Ron may end up with it.
I'm going to turn in the airworthiness certificate.

that would be cool,it is a top notch tractor design that you have proven. it would be ashamed to see it cut up.

to bad someone with the funds can not buy the design rights from you and turn it into a kit.

It would be a good alternative to the Little wing, if someone was on a budget.

It looks like a very simple to build airframe. retro fit it with one of Racers yamaha's and that would be a sweet machine for sure.

It is disheartening Michael, to see any aircraft grounded forever…..especially one-of-a-kind such as yours. But I am sure you have given this a lot of thought. Your gyro stability video should be watch by all new gyro builders. Thank you for adding and giving so much to the gyro community. I hope that some day you do start again.....

Hey Chuter,

What a shock! All the sold stuff is just that - stuff - mostly off the shelf stuff. Your airframe, OTOH, is a work of art. Don't destroy it!

You've gone where not many are willing or able to go wrt tractor design. I had hoped to see some drawings or even get hold of the frame myself.

Wind the watch for a while!

Cheers,

Mike

Sorry to hear it's getting parted out. If the frame ends up in the PRA museum at least people can go measure it.

Hey Terry,

I work in Edmond at UCO. Edmond has really built up in the last 20 years; traffic really sucks.

Nice to find another okie.

Hi Michael

I was told once that if I had a complete airframe and remove the landing gear and tail wheel (or nose wheeel) then it was not a flyable airframe but just parts and the liability was not there, maybe this is something to consider ?

Tony

Hi Tony,

I hadn't heard that about the landing gear; it won't have wheels and axles or tailwheel when I get through with it, and I'm turning in the airworthiness certificate.
I'm hoping that if I donate it maybe I don't have to worry; what do you think? Or any aviation lawyers out there?

Michael

I sold a flyable gyro once, but was advised by my attorney to disassemble the machine into a non-flyable condition, make a bill of sale clearly stating that it was PARTS AND SALVAGE and require the buyer to sign the bill of sale and I was good.

As far as liability goes, well if your alive, you are probably liable for something :)

Tony

Micheal, Please contact Glenn Bundy at the PRA Museum about your airframe. He can give you a letter of release for your donation!
