My instructor Dave Seace always cautions me to land near an intersection and get off the runway as soon as possible. He says his greatest fear is a taildragger coming in behind him and ....well you know the rest.

Incidents like this have been waiting to happen as EAA progressively started mixing completely dissimilar aircraft. They encourage the mix and thus have a responsibility never to leave a runway segment without some form of positive control. Don't hold you breath waiting for them to assume any measure of responsibility.

The Avenger is a huge taildragger that must make PROPER S-turns. The Avenger's PIC knew the wide range of aircraft that potentially could be on the taxiway and he knew that he could not make proper S-turns. He should have requested/demanded a wingwalker. I'm sure he feels terrible - he should!

This "accident" was no such thing. It was completely preventable if all those responsible were doing their job. Safety will never improve in any area if all of us don't start to do a realistic assessment of the problems, followed by a mandatory "fix".

...and this was one of FOUR fatalities at Oshkosh this year. This one, however, was the only one in which EAA's procedures are in question.

Very sad, after 15 years without a fatal at the event.

Don't forget the fatal a couple of years ago at OSH when the Bearcat ran over the Corsair. That one was the Bearcat's fault. He was listening to the Corsair flight leader, not the Bearcat flight leader.

That statement offends me Tim. Maybe I should find pictures of Bill and Terrys crashed gyro remains and say gyros are dangerous on a fixed wing forum???

Cool down Ron.

Everything that flys is dangerous.

If you get offended at flying something that is called dangerous you won't be able to fly anything.

I just hate when I hear someone who only has flown one type of aircraft say that other types are dangerous. It doesn't matter what kind of aircraft your flying, chances are plenty of the same type have crashed or had some kind of problems. Even the Space shuttle has gone down twice. I am not Offended in the traditional sence, just don't like a blanket statement about fixed wings are dangerous, it implies that gyros are not. This crash would not have happened had proper procedure been used. This not much different than taxiing a gyro in a area with people and or other aircraft with the gyros blades spinning. Crap can happen....

Ron, methinks your chain's been pulled. I interpreted that as a joke.

C'mon...coming on a gyro forum and calling fixed-wings dangerous? :)

Thank you Paul.

I was getting worried there for a second.

(p.s. Ron I do have some FW time...)

Nope! I'll be doing the radio show from an investment conference in Coeur 'd Alene, Idaho. Maybe next year. There are some guys in Chapter 73 getting the itch to do a gyro pilgrimage, and El Mirage is the nearest gyro fly-in, about a thousand miles closer than Mentone!

I am holding out faint hope for ROC this year. Never been to that one.
