I'm not a pilot but have been lucky enough to fly in Mi-24 Hind, Mi-2, Mi-17, Lynx HAS3, Gliders, GA
Ouch. Bummer.

That's a really long and wide, hard packed beach. You could land a Cessna 172 there without incident. Must have been strong crosswinds or maybe he hit a turtle?

From the ASIAS report:

FLYING ALONG THE BEACH LINE, LOST POWER AND RECEIVED A STRONG TAILWIND. GYROCOPTER LANDED ON ITS SIDE.

Ahh, low flying with a tailwind. Can't really blame the gyro for that one.

I have fond memories of flying my SC Vortex into a strong headwind, behind the power curve over an 18 mile section of mostly deserted Matagorda beach from about 2" high to around 8' high. I flew right over the water breaking on the wide, flat beach, then zoomed up over the dunes when cars passed by, then right back down over the water. Fun stuff.
