I was able to taxi my KB-2 for the first time this weekend. I just got the Gyro back from Roger Farnes from Flabob, He moved the pedals closer to the seat so I can reach them.

It was a thrill, We borrowed some wood blades from Dave Bacon for taxing purposes. My Dad and I taxied down the taxi way in Hemet several times. We both mastered stirring with the bottom pedal and brakes then moved up to rudder control after going a little faster. I did find it a little getting use to but was able to master after a few runs down the taxi way. Sunday we put on the Sky wheels and it was different then the wood blades it had more power over all and acted like it wanted to take off. The main wheel wanted to lift up with lower speeds then the wood ones. I did not manage to bring up the main wheel yet or my Dad either we wanted to take more time at taxing before starting to balance on the mains. I think next weekend I will start to push it even faster to bring up the main wheel and start to balance.

I also learned how to hand prop with Dave's help and yes it is not as bad as I thought it would be.

My Dad and I had a blast, We both have to thank Dave for all his help. Here is some pictures we took of this weekend.

Dave and I,
Me hand starting the prop,
Me in the gyro,
Poker game in our hanger after a day of gyro fun.

What a life!! love it :D :D

Tina, I hope it goes well for you and your Dad.
Just take your time with it, and be safe.

I also transitioned from FW to gyros.
My cell number is below if you have any questions.

I will try this again

I will try this again

this is a test to check size of picture

With my Dads help, who is a computer guru, we shrank the pictures to size that is uploadable on this forum.

I borrow two phrases from the book (So you want to fly a Gyrocopter) by Paul Bergen Abbott.
(Your life will never be the same
You will have become a different person)
All the best with your trainig.

Tina, the pics are too small! Reduce them to no more than 150kb and no less than around 60kb.... yours are 11kb and hard to tell what is what.

Please be careful, once those blades are spinning you are flying.... even if the wheels are on the ground. I mean it..... A side gust can easily tip you over if your not prepared to correct for it.

Tina,

Thanks for sharing your excitement. It's a whole different world, isn't it?

Be careful. From what I've read there are more gyros torn up by people "just taxiing" than you'd ever expect.

Have fun.

Tina congrats, told ya hand propping the engine was not hard. and i am sure all the men at the airport was wondering who the lady was hand propping a gyro..:)

Just remember when you push it faster,be ready for it. sounds like you where already at flying speed. just be real careful.like Ron said the blades where already flying at that speed. sounds like you are doing very well so far.
How many hours duel time do you have logged in gyro so far?
fly safe.... :)

Tina,

If you don't already have a photo editing program, you can download one for free at https://www.irfanview.com/.
I have a copy on my computer. It doesn't have the features of the higher end programs like Paint Shop Pro, but it'll help to resize pictures.

In IrfanView, try resizing the pictures by clicking Image, then Resize/Resample.
Try 14" at first.
Then click File, and Save As.
You'll also see a seperate window open up with JPEG/GIF Save Options.
Set the sliding scale to 70 for image quality, this will compress the file size with minimal loss in quality.
Select JPEG as the file type.
Click save.

Check the file size in the folder you've saved it in, and if it's over 150kb, try resizing it to 12", 10", etc. until it's below 150kb.

Hello Tina.
Glad to know you are getting there.
Take extra care, this is the most important and tricky part. Master it well.
Flying is only minor part.
Concentrate on stick position to achieve balance point.
It is harder to balance at low speeds. A good balance practice with increase in power will result in lift off at about 35 to 40 mph. The stick will neutralize itself, let the gyro fly on its own, with minimal input from pilot once in the air with power.
Must do this in no wind conditions and after you have mastered each step, move on the light head wind etc. Watch out for down wind turn.
Landing is easy. Engine Rpm controls the descent keep descending at cruise speed till touching down, practice flares and emergency procedures.
Keep Practicing in your mind. Do all the maneuvers.
Good Luck.

Miracle cure ?

Tina,

Glad to see you are in the game.

Who did you go to train with ?

Did you not have a stroke a few days ago or am I confused ?

Great on the photos

Great Tina. Have been following your progress.

Did you mean "Nose wheel" when you said main wheel?

Make sure that an experienced gyro pilot flys your machine first to set lateral stick position and approximate trim spring tension for your weights.

Aussie Paul. :)

Jonathan,

That was Heather Poe who had the stroke. Watch your tongue... you know how rumors spread around here...

My prayers are with Heather on a speedy recovery...

Congrats Tina on the taxi testing.. can't wait till I get there....

Screw-In

Way to go Tina! Very happy for you.

Screw-Out

Tina,
You are really progressing fast. I love the taxie and flying the run way, more than I like flying the pattern. The Kb2 is such a fun gyro!!

Hello Rehan, you said,
The stick will neutralize itself, let the gyro fly on its own, That advice will only work if the trim is set correctly for the approximate weight of the pilot.

Aussie Paul.:)

Great job Tina,

May the wings of the eagles help you soar through the heavens......oh, forget that crap! Hope ya had fun!
