Hi guys,

I'm Tim Witham. I was here years ago on Norm's forum. I'm the guy that built a gyro in 1999 and had live pictures and video on the net, called "gyro-cam". My bird is N199TW. I am still flying it around Northern California and am a member of PRA Chapter 5.

However, I am now moving over to Texas. I will need some small hangar space there, roughly 30' x 6'. If you know of any gyro guys flying around in Texas, please let me know. Any hangar within 2 or 3 hours of Austin would qualify until I find one closer.

Thanks for any tips!

Welcome

Welcome to Texas!! 2 or 3 hours from Austin is quite a ways. Will you be moving to Austin?

I can vouch for Tim as an excellent hanger mate to have. We've shared a hanger at Watts-Woodland near Woodland, CA now for a couple of years. I'm NOT happy to see him leave. Hmmm... perhaps change the hanger lock :)

Toby,

Thanks for your reply! Yes, I am moving to Austin. Once I settle there, I want to find a hangar within an hour of Austin so then I could drive to the airport and go fly like I do now. In the meantime, I just need a hangar home to move the gyro to. That could be further away if necessary. I would just fly it home to Austin later after I locate a close hangar. Of course, if I can find a close hangar now, that would be best!

I contacted Greg Massey president of Chapter 62. He didn't know of anyone near Austin. Looks like most of you are near Houston. I see you are there as well. That is a bit further than I could go, but I would probably come to a meeting someday.

I know Ken Rehler was about an hour south of Austin. I was so sad to hear of his accident. Do you know if there were any others flying gyros near there?

Thanks for the recommendation John! I have sure enjoyed my stay here in NorCal. We have had some memorable times flying together.

I think Craig Wall still flys out of Hondo which a bit further south. I'm afraid I don't know anyone else in that area.

I know there's a nice little airport in Georgetown which is just north of Austin. We usually go camping at one of the Corp of Engineers Parks that are at Lake Georgetown. The planes are always buzzing the lake. One time some crazy guy flew about 10 ft over the water. It really is pretty country around Austin.

My parents have some land in Kerrville so I make the westward migration a few times every deer season.:D

I haven't checked but I suspect that the gyro people up North around Waxahachie and there abouts are probably about as close as you are going to get. I don't know how far Olney is from Austin. However, there should be a small airport close to Austin. I've often thought about stopping at La Grange to check out that airport for fly-ins and etc. Try looking at Airnav.Com https://www.airnav.com/airports/us/TX

Kittie Hill is a small airport in Leander, just a few miles north of Austin. I was there once, seem to remember that it has grass strips and an old-time ambiance. That would be my first choice if I had to live in Austin.

San Geronimo Airpark is 118 miles south of Austin, just west of San Antonio. They are building more hangers now, probably have some available before you get moved. Good possibility of sharing a space. There are two gyros there now. You can email me me if you need more info.

Hey Dolph - I did check out that airport in La Grange. It is privately owned by the non-flying heirs of a plumbing magnate from Houston. It has long, wide paved runway, marker lights, etc. When he was alive, the strip was informally open to locals. The hangers are now used to park tractors and combines. I talked to their ranch foreman who gave the impression that it is unlikely that the strip will ever be open to public again.

Joe, thanks for this info. If I can't find anything closer I'll give you a call. Maybe we'll fly together one day! :-)

New gig in TX?

Well, yeah. I'm finally getting married and need to live in an affordable state to have a family. It's also much closer to where we are from. I will be working a similar job with the same company; I got to transfer. I will miss California, but am looking foward to moving on.

Kittie Hill does look ideal, but I can't reach anyone there. I found a place to put the gyro in San Marcos though. I will go check out my options in person once I get there in a couple weeks.

Thanks for your help guys!
