Had a random thought last night.... and I'm curious if anyone has tried using mountain bike disc brakes on their gyros?

I bought a set from Amazon for about 80 bucks..... it looks like they would be fairly easy to install on my Genesis, and they are very light weight as well. They are based on mechanical pull, so I can easily tie both brakes to a single brake lever, like I currently do for my drum brakes.

Anyone ever try something similar to this?

I hope to be doing some ground testing this weekend with my drum brakes.... hopefully they will do all I need, but I like the idea of upgrading to a disc brake setup in the future.

Hi Gary.
What a coincidence, just yesterday, Ives a PRA 31 brother was helping me and said he used those disk brakes and they work very well!

I was thinking of putting them on both my customers and my Genesis G1SA and our co-owned G2SA and attaching the current two Eye bolts on the ruder petals to a short cable to a pulley or over a rod or bold to operate the hydraulic master cylinder.

Do they make hydraulic disc brakes for bikes? Or are they all cable.

Has anyone setup hydraulic brakes using these disc brakes that could help us out with a make and model?

Thanks, guys.

I hope MultiMike chimes in with how well these work??? I like how he mounted them.

John, there are many options for these brakes. They do make hydraulic versions, but they are pre-built and bled, so you end up with a brake lever per brake. That's great for a bicycle, but for my application I want one brake lever to work both brakes.

I'm happy to report that the mountain brakes work flawlessly. They are mechanical (cable operated, no hydraulics). Very easy to adjust, very light, good holding power, for my gyro with an all up weight of 570 pounds. I use a go-ped style pre-rotator, and I don't need to stand on the brakes to spin up my rotor as you need to with the Wunderlich style pre-rotator (Although, I think they would do the job). I have a full castering nose wheel, turn by differential braking, and I can turn on one wheel. I tried the heel brake style on the rudder pedals but couldn't get used to them so I flipped them up as toe brakes and like them much better.
If you want to use one pedal to brake, hydraulic style would be easier to get equal braking.

It looks like a couple of people have already done this.... thanks for the performance report, Multimike.

Based on this information, I think I'll try to do this on my gyro. I'll let you know how it goes!!!
