I stumbled upon a website that worries me, and I need a sanity check. Santa Monica Flyers is pushing some stuff that looks pretty bizarre to me.

They say things like this:

The sport pilot certificate is valid for three years, after which you must renew it by passing a written exam and practical flying test.

And this:

What are the types of sport pilot certificates?

Here are some of the sport pilot certificates and what they allow pilots to do:
Sport Pilot License:
Allows holders to operate light sport aircraft for recreational purposes.
Sport Pilot Certificate with an Instrument Rating: Allows holders to operate light sport aircraft in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC).
Sport Pilot Certificate with a Multi-Engine Rating: Allows holders to operate light sport aircraft with more than one engine.

And this:

Sport pilots must have a sport pilot certificate to operate sport aircraft, even if they already have another type of flying license.

And this:

Some examples of sport aircraft include the Cessna 152, the Piper Archer III, and the Diamond DA20 Katana (bold text added)

These people seem to be for real, and there is a 2023 copyright date on the website so it doesn't appear to be out of date or inactive.

Am I crazy, or are they spending too much time at their local "dispensary"?

This is what happens when you legalize recreational marijuana.

Apologies to all the potheads in advance

Stupidity has nothing to do with the consumption of marijuana. I have known many an idiot that had it blamed on Mary Jane. They were that way before them dating her.

I know we're joking about the unbelievable stuff written on Santa Monica Flyers web site, but it's either joke or scream. I find it difficult to believe an organization specializing in aviation could evidence such ignorance of the regulations.

Maybe one of you California guys near Santa Monica could help them out.

I would be willing to bet it was written by their web master. That person probably is not a pilot and most likely didn’t read in detail the services they provided and most likely combined those services into a Sport Pilot program that doesn’t exist.

If I'm feeling friendly later this week, maybe I'll give them a call or an email. They should hope their FSDO doesn't read my posts here, or their website for that matter. At least they're not a 141 school!

Yes Jon. The first thing I looked for was whether they were Part 141/142. As a Part 61 operation they receive almost no FAA oversight, but the Van Nuys FSDO wouldn't be able to ignore the clear misinterpretations on their web site.

What A find.
I am packing a bag right now to head out there.
I need to get my sport pilot license upgraded to multi engine, Turbine, Instrument rating So I can
fly my F-15 Eagle i just bought from Nigeria back to the US at Mach 2 at 45k feet at night so the sun won't be in my eyes.
:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Damn you Waspy and all dem Lawyer types!
Your gonna screw it up for us "little guys"....sure I can't afford an AS18 but that doesn't mean I shouldn't be able to get my turbine light sport multi IFR rating for gliders and balloons does it?

Lol. Here's another good one from the website: "Finally, sport pilot licenses are more limited than other types of flying certificates, meaning sport pilots have to operate with a higher level of safety and caution when in the air. This makes sport pilot licenses safer for both sport pilots and others in their vicinity."
