No one is coming to fight Rotax on their turf that I know of, though we've been doing our best to provide an affordable alternative with the Geo/Suzuki engines for 16 years now. We are however moving directly to pick up the slack now that they have bowed out of the Rotax 503DC 52HP market. We are setting up to produce our lightest 993cc Geo 4-Stroke engine package to date at the same weight as the old 503, but with more HP and way better fuel burn. We will have the prototype at our Seminars at Copperstate EAA airshow in October.

Jeron, just curious...where did you get this info about the 503? There was supposed to be a considerable supply of 447s and 503s in inventory, and the 503 was certified to ASTM standards just last year for LSA.

Are there enough old Metros still around to provide a reliable supply of engine cores?

That is almost twice the size of the 503, with more components than the 2 cycle. Are you counting the weight of the gearbox with the 503 or just the engine

The major Rotax® vendors at Oshkosh were clearancing out the Rotax 503's that they had in stock and told me that it was out of production.

There are still numerous Geo 3 cylinder engines available. The great part is that for this conversion we only need the long block with distributor as we are going with aftermarket carb(s), custom exhaust, alternator, etc. The exact weight of the 503DC is 106 lbs. with B box, exhaust, and pull start. We are simply adding our new extra lightweight belt drive/flywheel to the 95 pound direct drive Geo engine we developed a few years back to come in at the same weight. This is the same Geo engine that we are developing anyway for our ultralight STOL aircraft.
