I purchased an ignition switch in a aircraft flee market. The switch is for an airplane with duel mags. So it has a place for an ignition wire for the RH and LH and both.(BO) On the back side where the wires attatch There is also something labeled PR. What does that mean. I thought it was power?. or a place tp put accessories. Can someone answer?

Hi Larry, In my experience when dealing with switches, it is best to find out what is conected to what in which position. Your switch may be used to ground one or both mags. It also probably has an open and closed for turning the electrics on an off. I have found it best to just see what goes to what instead of trying to crack the code. It is good to find out how much resistance there is and to make sure that it has the capicity to handle your needs. Use a multi meter. Thank you, Vance

Probably Pressure Relay for a fuel injection engine, so when switched on it turns on the start pump. In fuel injected aircraft engines it normally has two pumps, one is for running and the other is only used during starting and that is normally connected to the start switch i.e. the Key.

Installation of Ignition Switch
A) Use SHIELDED wire on all connections and ground to nearest structural member.
B) Terminal 1 must have a jumper installed when LEFT MAG has IMPULSE COUPLING or is RETARD BREAKER MAG.
C) Connect wire from RIGHT MAG to terminal 1 of drawing.
Connect wire from LEFT MAG to terminal 2 of drawing.
Connect wire from STARTER SOLENOID to terminal 3 of drawing.
Connect wire from Positive terminal of power supply to terminal 4 of drawing.
Connect wire from terminal 5 of drawing to nearest structural membe

hey Caribean Gyro Guy!!! That is the layout on the back of my switch exactly. Will I be ok to use it on a FI EJ22? suggested changes in wiring over the 2 mag system you described? Also thank you immencely!!! :)
What would I use on the primary? What does it do? I thought I could put an accessory lead there?

I dont se why not in the car engine you only have 1 ignition so I would not use the switch ugn. feature. probably bring the ignition signal to be killed here and aalso to have a place to tag my RPM ind. Now how the SPH guys doit will be good to know if they use aircraft mag switch. but for a starter and kill switch can work for anything.

remeber to use relay to start the engine dont go direct from the switch. too much amp to handle
chuck

Larry;

That is the same switch I used for our ej22. I don't have the diagram in front of me but I can get it for you if you want to wait until monday. I remember that I had to jumper a few connections in order for the engine to be able to start and run. Terminal 5 is normaly connected to the ground. On the ej22 it will be connected to power. if you then connect the left and right mag connections the engine will run in left or right once started. There is one other terminal that needes to be connected to power for the ignition to have power durring the start mode on the switch but I am not sure where it is. turn the switch to start and hold it and you can measure it with a meter to see what I am talking about. there will be no power to the left or right mags durring the start sequence. So there is one other jumper to install. I just dont remember where to install it. good luck

Mike. I would very much appreciate your diagram. Is your ej22 fuel injected? I have a starter motor turning over the engine but no spark.if you have the solution, it will save me the hassel.

Our ej22 is fuel injected. I had te same problem when I tried it the first time. The engine would crank but no spark. I found that I was not getting power to the ignition when the switch was in start mode. It is just a simple jumper to fix the problem. I will get the information to you monday night.

Ignition power is connected to the terminals marked BAT, R, GRD (in the center of the switch)
Trbl light pos is connected to The terminal marked GRD (on the outside under the terminal marked R)
ignition is connected to The terminal marked GRD (on the outside under the terminal marked R)
Starter connected to the terminal marked S
terminals BO, LR, L are not connected.

MIKE, thank you for you help!!! I'll give it a try tonight. again------Thank-you.

if you can't get that working right try the universail ignition switchs from advanced auto or other parts store, they are very simple to wire I used one on my Dusty2 helicopter and in my Scorpion, they have a start term. for a wire to the starter,a batt. term,a terminal to the ignition, and an essecory term. yeah i know i need spell checker..lol I run a seperate fuse block for radios and stuff. but these swithes work great and are cheap.

good luck, just thought I would tell ya what worked for me on the Helicopters.

tHANKS FOR THE ADVICE. I TRIED THE IDEA FROM MIKE AND i STILL GET NO SPARK. mAYBE i WILL TRY THE SIMPLIER STARTER.Sorry about the big letters :)

Hello Larry, There may be a problem with the switch. In my experance it is always best to start with a good multi meter and find out what is what. Electrical challenges can be very frustrating because you can't see the electricity move without using a multi meter or just seeing if there is evidense of the presense of electricty in the correct place. Isolating the challenge always helps me. Thank you, Vance

Thanks vance. I did that and all posts show resistance depending on where the switch is positioned. I got out the wiring diagram Don Parham sent me and I am in the course of chasing down wires to make sure all are routed to  where they are supposed to be. I thought I did that, but maybe I wasn't 100% accurate.

What is wrong with using a toggle switch and starter button? Alot of the new cars are going back to starter buttons. Remember KISS..... you guys know what it stands for!

Ron, what is wrong with a toggle switch and a starter button is the same thing that is wrong with men wearing high heels and a dress. It just don't appeal.( at least to me it don't) :D
