A rare Tropical Storm is set to arrive over Southern California on Sunday, 20 AUG 2023. It is projected that the center of the storm will pass over San Diego, CA. Several computerized models have the center of the storm pass a little further West over Orange County / Long Beach, CA area. If it arrives over San Diego, it might still be a CAT 1 Hurricane. If further West over Orange County / Long Beach (and over colder water) it will arrive as a Tropical Storm. In the aftermath, we'll find more roof and window damage of houses, and many uprooted trees as compared to Gulf Coast residents because of higher population density, and lack of personal preparation and mitigation.

California OES, various counties and cities Emergency Operation Centers (EOCs) throughout SoCal were activated yesterday.

Cat 1 or a tropical storm isn’t that bad. We don’t even bother much till it’s a Cat 3. But do take some preparation steps. They go a long way. Cut tree branches. Get food and water because electricity may be gone for a couple of days. Get a lot of ice etc. for saving food. Secure loose items. Simple things.

the expected precipitation/channeled and concreted waterways along with the poor soil percolation ability is going to make some great opportunities for the 'boarders'. Expect a LOT of new YouTube posts..

some people's lives will be washed away, while an equal amount will be setting up for the perfect 'hold my beer' type shot..

The Low and High Deserts of SoCal are expected to experience the worst flash flooding. Palm Springs and surrounding cities are trying to prepare as best as they can. All the dry lake beds (including El Mirage) will not be dry when the storm is finished.

I wonder if there is any critter, virus or bacteria just under the surface.. laying dormant for hundreds of years.. about to be awakened?

Might have to join the Salton Sea Yacht Club!

I just called Flight Service for a briefing for flying back from the EAA meeting at San Luis Obispo at 21:00 Z tomorrow.

The Prog chart says don't do it, the terminal area forecast says I am good to go but has not been updated.

I will be driving tomorrow.

They seem to be confused about how fast the storm is moving and exactly what its track will be.

I am a native Californian and do not remember the last tropical storm warning issued for California.

Is that a live stream
No, just a photo I snatched online...
The Salton sea came about in the early thirties when the Colorado severely flooded south of Blythe.
They thought it was going to be a bigger resort area than the "Riviera" and started building resorts and towns...
The water kept getting saltier from mountain run off and no flow until the fish died, the entire region smelled like rot
and then it collapsed.... This could provide a similar event if enough rains falls....

From all the dry lake beds? Most fill up with some amount of water during the rainy season. That's how the lake beds get so very smooth. Winds push around the water scrubbing the bed smooth. After evaporation and the winds blow away the dust it is very level and smooth.

From about 500 BCE to around 1580 CE, Lake Cahuilla was an ancient lake that covered the Southern portion of the Cochella Valley and most of the Imperial Valley. The lake existed in several stages over the last 2,000 years, periodically drying and refilling and eventually disappearing sometime after 1580. Around 1905, a break in an irrigation canal that was dug from the Colorado River to the old Alamo River channel to provide water to the Imperial Valley for farming allowed water to flow for the next two years into what is now the Salton Sea. Right after WW2 up to the 1960s, several resorts were built around the Salton Sea and it became a mecca for water sports activity including a flight school whereas one can add on a Sea Plane (ASES) rating by flying J-3 Cubs with floats. Unfortunately, all the insecticides, pesticides, and fertilizers used over the years from all the Imperial Valley farms eventually entered into the Salton Sea creating an ecological hazard and disaster.

It looks like the center of Tropical Storm Hillary will move Northward along the Imperial and Cochella Valleys in the Low Desert. The greatest potential of flash flooding will be in the Low and High Deserts.

In San Diego County, there is a very famous all wood Goat Canyon Railroad Trestle that is around 90 years old. I wonder how it will hold up to the winds and rain?

I wonder about the poles and lights that my unit and I installed on the border. When we would have just a very short rain storm the erosion was drastic. 1/2 in rain would cause flooding and ruts three or four feet deep. I can’t imagine what this storm is going to do. This weather is crazy.

Just spoke to Norman in Labrador he said for the first time in history they shut the river down because of the high temps of the water. Last winter they also didn’t get water frozen solid until much much later in the season. Temp change is real not sure it’s man made or just cyclic doesn’t matter. Our home is changing for the worse if you ask me.
