Hallo everyone, I'm Paolo from Italy, I live in sardinia island and I'm a police helicopter pilot.
I started flying in seaplanes when I was 15, got my PPL/A, build hours, got ratings, flew different planes and ultralights, but only recently, (I'm now 49) I got my gyroplane rating and started flying that lovely machine.
Unfortunally there's no school or club on the island that have one, so I can't fly it as long as I don't find one to buy.
I trained on a Magni M16, I visited Magni factory and I liked a lot their professionality.
Never flown an Ela but I se several on the italian market, so now I will need your help to build a knowledge to make a decision about what to buy.
Thank in advance to all

Welcome to the forum! If you have not seen the Aviomania.com website and what Nicolas offers, please take the time to consider his line of gyroplanes.

You should also consider Claudio Pagotto's line of gyros ([email protected]).
His Blazer gyro comes with fire resistant fuel tanks and the Gyro Warning System (GWS) that would be very useful for you as a fixed wing pilot coming to Gyros. He has a Brako gyro in a flight school near his factory that can demonstrate the GWS with all alarms in Italian.

It looks like he started in Fixed wing then went to being a professional Helicopter pilot.

Rick, thanks for your comment.
I understood that he started as a FW pilot and later was also a helicopter pilot. It's not clear if he continued flying FW while flying helicopters.
The point I'm trying to make is that his initial training was fixed wing and he probably still has a lot of FW muscle memory because that was the first thing he learned to fly.
I have a similar history to him, learning to fly FW PPL and later in the RAF flying jets and helicopters. When I started flying gyros much later in life I found it unnatural to accelerate down the runway with the stick fully back and had to work on myself to overcome the instinct to put the stick neutral. Even helicopter pilots take off with the stick neutral and then advance the stick to start accelerating so I think my recommendation to Paolo is relevant.

Welcome here, Paulo. I would strongly recommend the Magni over the ELA. Better design, construction, and factory support. ELAs have had several fatal mechanical failures in flight in the past.

Thanks to everyone for your answers.
In reality I have much more flying hours (around 3200) on hely that fixed wing, that I'm still flying few hours a year. 😅
Gyro is a total new experience, but I love it and I'd like to go on flying it.
Thank you Andino, that where my concerns about ELA comes from, but it's difficult to find something different in Italy right now.

Can you give any details on your comment of fatal mechanics failures in flight of the ELA? I haven’t heard of any. What did I miss?
