I am getting VERY close to having met my requirments to take my check ride :D .

One sticky one is that I need to make a few takeoffs and landings at a towered airport.

AirNav says:

Airport use: Open to the public
Sectional chart: CHICAGO
Control tower: no

Here is the long shot.....

Since we will have 'air-bosses' at the convention does that count as a tower? :o

Lets say I get a NO answer to that question.

Can any of you Indiana people tell me if there is a towered airport you would recommend? ( gyro friendly or low traffic ). Maybe I could trailer my gyro over there on the way to Mentone and run the pattern a few times with out ticking anyone off?

Gary airport isn't very busy. Don't know if they will let you trailer it in or not. But you could use Lansing, IL airport and fly into Gary. Gary is about 6 miles to the N.W. so it's a short hop. Plus you'll get a good view of lake Michigan and downtown Chicago.

I don't think an "Air Boss" will count. :(

I flew from Rensselaer (RZL) to Lafayette, Ind. which is a towered airport, to White Co. (Monticello, Ind.) and back to Rensselaer. Before I started my X-country, I called Lafayette (aka Purdue) tower and told them that I would be coming. I think it was the first time a gyro had ever flown into their airport. I was told that Purdue is the busiest airport in Indiana according to take-offs and landings, as Purdue student pilots are constantly flying there. In fact, the tower is run by students as well. Maybe a good thing or not. Good luck and enjoy your x-country where ever it takes you.

WHen I took my check ride went trhu the same. The airport never had a tower, but whenthere was an air show they "FAA" send a notam of the control zone and was mandatory to call a mobile tower. SO if they tell you. That airport dont have a tower?

Your answer, Yes it did thare was an air show and air space was manage by a temporary tower. Problem

Tim, I called my closest controlled tower airport (Roanoke) and talked to the guys in the tower. They told me the best time to come over, and I trailored my gyro. They then let me do the required take offs and landings flying a short pattern - staying in sight of the control tower. I'm sure you could do the same in your area.

Excellent feedback!!! And good advice. It is a pain in the butt to use the sectional online so I will go buy a paper one tomorrow. My Airport Directory is for the wrong region also.

I don’t mind flying in but I do like to watch the pattern and listen to the radio at new busy airports before I jump in. Calling or visiting first is great advice also. Trailering in would be preferred but I am in a pinch for time.

I am under the impression that the tower landing does not have to be on the x-country.

Does anyone know if Mentone is going to be declared ‘temporally’ controlled airspace?

Use of FW hours for Gyro Ticket

Use of FW hours for Gyro Ticket

I have some fixed wing hours and of course fix wing CFI are easier to access.

Here is the question:

Can anyone give me a link directly to the FAA regs?

I want to know if I can use a Fixed Wing CFI to get my duel x-country time or my 3 hours of check-ride prep-time.

Sorry Tim, The required X-country hours have to be in the same category aircraft. The same goes for the prep time.

if the above link doesn't work try:
https://afs600.faa.gov/srchFolder.asp?Category=practicalteststandard&cmdScroll=2
and scroll down to,
Private Pilot Practical Test Standards for Rotorcraft, Helicopter, and Gyroplane

Here's the link to the FAR's;
https://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=ecfr&sid=a63599f1dd1ed955f2dfca51eb2e85d7&tpl=/ecfrbrowse/Title14/14cfr61_main_02.tpl

Look at parts 61.107 and 61.109 for Private Pilot Gyroplane.

Chuck, Quick Question.

I apologize for not looking this up in the link you gave me but I am at work and impatient :)

Please kick me if I am wrong about this but.....

CATEGORY is Rotorcraft

Class is gyroplane

Therefore..

I could take my x-country duel and or prep-time in a HELICOPTER?

That could be good news because I can get access to a Heil instructor far more easily then a gyro CFI.

Well Tim, you are correct about the Heli x-county time counting. BUT it only counts if you already have the Heli rating (category). If you look thru the PTS (Practical test Standards) is spells it out for you in there.

Since I already had a Rotorcraft Gyro rating, when I went for my Heli rating (class) the x-country time from the Gyro counted. So I did not have to do the normally required x-county time in the Heli. Nor the night time or tower time. Basically I had to "Fly to Proficency". Which meant when the instructor thought I was ready. He signed me off for the check ride.

Chuck, Thanks for the info!

Well looks like it's have to be gyro time!

I thinl the reg state 3 landings at 3 diferent airport and 1 with a control tower.
