I am worried for the ultralight community. Because of this it maybe a thing of the past. There are many gyros out there that fly under the radar. I mean those flying heavy gyros that really are not ultralights. I can also see the ones that do fly legal heavy gyros will be made to have transponders now just you wait and see.

When some of you say any publicity is good, I say your wrong! This is not good for the gyro community at all!
There may be a black lash! However I have had the Press and two people call me saying about the same thing. They saw the gyroplane land on the lawn of the capital and they want one. So it's a good thing for me personally so far?

We should embrace this new opportunity, this has now giving us new activities at Mentone.
Along with the cluster cluck, spot landing and pylon race at Mentone we can now add to the games, Dodging Secret Service Agents or like in the 70s Running From the MAN. And Now showing for tonight's entertainment "Guess who coming to dinner"
And my favorite movie is Hey Michelle, look who drop by...it's Dougie .....:)
I like this game!

Earlier this morning I heard some snooty East Coast journalist/announcer almost choking over the word gyrocopter.

It confused her so much she pronounced both R's.

Gyroplanes did deliver mail for USPS -- in the 1930s

Gyroplanes did deliver mail for USPS -- in the 1930s

Of course, as we know, gyroplanes did deliver the mail in the 1930s for the USPS.

See: http://gizmodo.com/that-time-the-postal-service-actually-used-gyrocopters-1698027040

And all the other references to the autogyro prior to World War II. And a Pitcairn PCA-2 autogyro even landed on the White House lawn in 1931! -- YouTube footage.

Perhaps this incident will bring this service back to the USPS:lol:

Hey GT it looks like we have differing opinions.

1 Are you saying they knowingly let him accomplish his flight?
2 How do you know that?
3 If HE is a pacifist I'm Sophia Viagra.
4 Yup this was a gyroplane but they missed a few heavies too.
5 Believing in things that don't add up is dangerous.

I don't "know" anything, since absolutely nothing can be "known" absolutely when it comes to the folks running our national security programs. I simply deduced what is written in my post from common knowledge in the news and websites. Connect the dots and a cat is still a cat, no matter what crayon color you are using.

Pacifist is meant to be denoting a non-violent protestor, e.g., Martin Luther King, Jr., in this use of the term, and not necessarily an anti-war person. Doug Hughes stressed over and over his intent: that non-violence was his aim from the get-go, and that he took great measures to insure no harm to persons and/or damage to property resulted from his flight. Perhaps there is a better word which eludes me. Semantics. You get the general drift, right?

This just in.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The postal carrier who flew a gyrocopter onto the lawn of the U.S. Capitol is facing two criminal charges. But he's being released from federal custody to return to Florida.

Doug Hughes made his initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Washington on Thursday. That's one day after he steered his tiny aircraft onto the Capitol's West Lawn after flying through restricted airspace around the National Mall. He was charged with operating an unregistered aircraft and violating national airspace.

Hughes said it was a political protest.

Hughes was released on his own recognizance afterward and instructed to check in weekly with authorities in Tampa starting next week. In a soft voice, Hughes appeared to ask the judge a clarifying question about that obligation but otherwise he did not say anything significant.

Well since he was released, if they let him take his gyro with him, it would be possible if he doesn't stop much on the way to make it to Bensen Days in time to get both the Man and Machine ... AND the charmin award!

Thanks Brent for your brief interview with Rev Al Sharpton on MSNBC tonight! I know it was brief but definately could tell the media was going for the security issue and not giving any notice to the real reason why he did it in the first place. (Dont mind the issue of campaign finance reform). Hopefully we (the gyro community) can get some mileage with this and increase the interest in our sport and try to alleviate any negativity that the media produces. I am sure the EAA will jump right in to help the PRA in a supportive role ----NOT!!! Just my two cents worth and just a thought, but maybe the PRA board would consider a USA Today ad in support of our sport and the ultralight side of aviation. Dont want to initiate paralysis by analysis here but if the opportunity is here now it will be gone in a couple of days. As you all know, this news will be water under the bridge in the next day or so.

As Jeff noted, the FAA is considering this an unregistered flight under Part 91, so there will be more available in the way of penalties. He faces up to four years in prison. The fines will be trivial compared to forfeiting his USPS pension, if he was eligible for one.

It's hard to imagine he spent this long thinking and blogging about the protest, and didn't plan it in a way which wouldn't carry such a high personal cost.

A brief legal digression: it will take a constitutional amendment to eliminate the wholesale bribery that campaign finance has become.

Doug, I disagree. Most of the favors handed out to private interests by government would not stand if the Constitution got closer adherence. If there were no favors for sale, there would be no need to restrict the activities of buyers.

We wouldn't put hundreds of drunk college kids in a dark room and wonder why we couldn't achieve abstinence. So, why do we let the government hand out preferential treatment and money to special interests, then wring our hands when those special interests try to influence elections? The founders saw it coming and warned us, but we went there anyway.

Hi David

I do not know what overreaction our government will make, if any? But the usually do overreact.

On the up side I've gotten over 20 new contacts so far and Nicolas emailed me John do you know why I've received 15 emails since last night and this morning about our gyroplane.

Hehehehe... Yes Nico I know why! Let me tell you what happen...

Good example of what I was saying after that quote = how even bad publicity is good marketing and somethings the best exposure.

Thank you Doug for letting the world know about gyroplane.

Some guts to pull this off. Although most of us know of the crap that is happening in the manner which things are run by government agencies, how many of us have the courage of conviction to express our views? I remember writing to the OIG a couple years ago regarding the millions and billions lost to fraud in the Medicare system, and nothing happened other than a "thank you" automated response.

Most of us folks are more worried about just getting by with our lives, and paying our bills on time. So really, how does one change the crap that is going on? They say write to your senator, and again an automated thank you response is what one gets. Gets worse as time goes by. I give Doug a lot of credit, and hope they see this as a sign of the times.

I know how and it works. But they don't like(take your pick) and it can get violent when they respond.

Start first by getting your own house in order!!

Then put yourself in a place to weather a sh_t storm by paying your smaller
bills a yr in advance. Store food and water and ammo.

Then go clean their house for them. Call it an intervention if that's what it takes. But be bold and ready for the backlash and deal with it.

That's a start....good luck...it 's a dangerous nasty puss filled world and public servants (in their minds they are masters) ppl don't like being held to account when they know they are screwing the public. Even the so called good one's who quip "But I am a good person" copout.

Others may disagree but it works for me. Don't ask me to prove it .....you all are on your own. Good luck being a patriot!! Your going to need it.

John
Go back and read the sentence word by word.
It's sounds like a racial prejudice, or just maybe really just maybe you have something against our females dolling up a bit.
I rather like l-o-n-g b-l-a-c-k lash.

Lol

I support his action, granted everybody has there own opinion and I respect that, but his ideals were in the right place, IMO, to bad issue will get drawn away form the original intent!. I see he made the big time, Letterman show tonight, a lot of press for gryo copters, in fun and other of course, but was the big news of the day. Good for him that he got to go home, I think, pay back will come probable later.
He just delivered thoughts of I think many of us that can't get done or have the means or b-lls to do what he did. Tried voting as have been told sense I was a young buck, hasn't worked for me, anyway to my way of thinking, but this is the land of the free and everybody has a opinion.
One thing that always puzzled me was every sense I was small, even in school, was majority vote wins, except in voting for our leaders, get most popular votes and still lose race, never been able to explain that to our children as they grew up, and still can't, I know the political mumbo jumbo of it, but tell kids, you got most votes, but you lose????? Hard to sell that one in a democracy. Any way, congrats to Doug, for delivering mail, rain nor snow nor darkness of night nor SS stops the mail being delivered, AIR Mail no less!!!!! Gary PS. Just MOP, so don't was time on neg. post!!

They could not have butchered up names and locations worse! But it was positive!

I am wondering if the guys mispelled their names on purpose ... Gabor said his phone was already ringing off the hook from CNN & the major networks , but all they wanted to talk about was the political aspect (of the Capitol landing) , and Gabor said he would only talk about gyros.

Anyway , he has a new nickname "Kavaca" and we wont soon let him forget it :)
