Well by all accounts, it seems like this met his goal of bringing attention to his cause. It will also be a historical event. I don't think this will be a big negative to gyro's in general, if anything it will be more positive than negative, just for the national exposure of seeing a cool little flying machine.

When I built that gyro, I used a used rudder and controls and front fork from " Friendly " here.... a used horizontal from " animal ".... Used rotorblades from "Ultracruiser"... used engine from " scott biser " .... used prop from someone off barnstormers.... a front wheel assembly meant for a go ped.... Main wheels and tires from northern tool meant for a wheelbarrow... a Seat meant for a go kart.... a fuel tank meant as a jerry can from Jeggs racing.... and the rest all new materials. Had some good help from Barry K with cutting some of the aluminum and drilling holes. Also had some good help with some of the fabrication from Tim Moses not long before he was tragically killed in a plane crash. I built it and flew it only a handful of times, then sold it.... I only built it as a winter project to keep me busy and built it specifically to be able to break down and fit in a small enclosed trailer I bought and converted to a fly-in camper. I realized I wanted my two place at the fly-ins and not this single place. I had right at 5 grand invested in building the gyro and offered it for sale and sold it to another forum member for over a 3 grand profit! It flew him around for a few years, then another forum member, then it went to florida where it was flown by yet another forum member, then the mailman bought it. If its not destroyed by the feds, hopefully the gyro will survive and keep on flying. Bet it will be worth alot more than what it cost to build it 7 years ago!

The man is pretty obviously correct in his views.

Despite Doug's noble intentions, I fear that the rest of us may be punished with more restrictions on ultralights, or on civil aviation in general, as a result of this stunt.

A brief legal digression: it will take a constitutional amendment to eliminate the wholesale bribery that campaign finance has become. That's because the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that spending money on political advertising is a form of "free speech" protected by the First Amendment.

An amendment that actually worked might have to be pretty drastic -- say, banning ALL paid political advertising, period. IOW, "free speech" would mean speech, not spending: standing on a soapbox on the village green, shouting your message with your own lungs. Not buying $100 mil worth of ads, as the corporate big boys now do.

I'm not holding my breath.

How many people in the private sector would spend $100,000,000 to try and get a $2,000,000 job?

It is obviously corrupt but the ones making the laws are the corrupt ones, how do you change that?

This is just another example of how money is wasted in our government, both sides.
Billions on security ? Billions on intelligence ? This was public knowledge long before the flight. What a joke!

Someone started a petition to help get Doug pardoned.
http://wh.gov/iBxsH
I have signed and endorse this petition. I personally believe now, after reviewing what information is available so far, that what he did definitely deserves punishment, but I feel it should be more along the lines of a slap on the wrist and corrective punishment for airspace violation only, and not anything excessive beyond that to attempt to make the man a public "example". A petition can send this kind of message, and if enough people get on board then Doug has a better chance of being treated as a dissenting citizen trying to do the right thing, and nothing akin to some crazed terrorist trying to blow up marathon runners in Boston.

I do sympathize with his cause, and sometimes the ends justifies the means. This is such a case, because there is absolutely no other way to get the attention needed to bring about significant change on this matter in any other way, when you get right down to it.

When every single member of the ruling elite has his/her hands in the damn cookie jar, how can anyone ever expect them to quit paying themselves via excessive campaign contributions like they do now? Every time a campaign finance rule gets set up, someone finds a screwy way around it like PACS, SUPER PACS, and all the other weird campaign financiers' BS.

Money equals votes. And if campaign finance as ruled by the Supreme Court equals Free Speech, then votes are supposed to be one person, one vote, and equal. So MY dollar should count no more and no less than, say the Koch brothers' dollar, or Warren Buffet's or Bill Gates'. Why should THEIR candidates get a better shot at election than mine just because they are able to dump tons more money into the campaign than I?

This government is not "for the people, by the people". It is instead for big money, by big money and that is not going to change by any other means than ground swell grass roots campaigns and demands by the voting masses of every political orientation.

There's got to be a better way, and it's time to find it.

Kudos to Doug! He has accomplished his goal to bring attention to the loss of our representative Democracy here. More guts than I have, and I'm not talking about flying the gyro. He wanted to hijack the news media for this cause, and he did it. I doubt our politicians will pay any attention though - not anything in it for them!!!!!

Hillary expects to get $2.5 Billion to buy the Presidency!

We shall see if he hijacked the media. The story I am hearing is the up roar over security. It seems the campaign reform reason is just a side note. You can bet the people on the hill will demand investigations into all sorts of things except campaign finance reform.

Unfortunately, the forecasts of spending for the next Presidential election is 1 to 1.5 Billion dollars by each side. Yes, Billion, just to get the job for 4 years, then have to do it again.

I believe in our security and intelligence, and I believe that the way they handled this actually went just fine. They knew he was coming, they knew he was pacifistic, and they let him enter the restricted airspace and land with as little fuss as was practical while maintaining commensurate security and safety.

This was an ultralight gyrocopter cruising at 45 mph with a gallon and a half of reserve left on board, after all, and not a triple 7 loaded with 180 passengers, 10,000 lbs of Jet A, and some Al Qaida habib wearing a diaper on his head, with a box knife in his pocket, at the yoke doing 560 KTS bearing down on the Capital.

Like he says in his pre-launch video: any boyscout with a BB gun could bring him down, you don't need a wing of F-16's or Cobra's to keep him in line.

I am worried for the ultralight community. Because of this it maybe a thing of the past. There are many gyros out there that fly under the radar. I mean those flying heavy gyros that really are not ultralights. I can also see the ones that do fly legal heavy gyros will be made to have transponders now just you wait and see.

When some of you say any publicity is good, I say your wrong! This is not good for the gyro community at all!

Hey GT it looks like we have differing opinions.

1 Are you saying they knowingly let him accomplish his flight?
2 How do you know that?
3 If HE is a pacifist I'm Sophia Viagra.
4 Yup this was a gyroplane but they missed a few heavies too.
5 Believing in things that don't add up is dangerous.

Some guts to pull this off. Although most of us know of the crap that is happening in the manner which things are run by government agencies, how many of us have the courage of conviction to express our views? I remember writing to the OIG a couple years ago regarding the millions and billions lost to fraud in the Medicare system, and nothing happened other than a "thank you" automated response.

Most of us folks are more worried about just getting by with our lives, and paying our bills on time. So really, how does one change the crap that is going on? They say write to your senator, and again an automated thank you response is what one gets. Gets worse as time goes by. I give Doug a lot of credit, and hope they see this as a sign of the times.

.

Mostly it comes down to how the media will focus on this event .

They can either spin it as a wayward pilot , or as a message to Congress

Somebody should make sure the delivery of those 535 letters is completed , and then interview those 535 Congressmen afterwards , put them in the spotlight too , not just Mr Hughes .

And on a lighter note.....

And on a lighter note.....

We should embrace this new opportunity, this has now giving us new activities at Mentone.
Along with the cluster cluck, spot landing and pylon race at Mentone we can now add to the games, Dodging Secret Service Agents or like in the 70s Running From the MAN. And Now showing for tonight's entertainment "Guess who coming to dinner"
And my favorite movie is Hey Michelle, look who drop by...it's Dougie .....:)
