Gyro Ron seriously injured in a flying accident

man that sucks some big ones ron! I got my knee screwed to but don't remember having any pain, of course morphine is a little stronger than percosets! get well soon!

I felt a little better this morning, but then as the percoset wore off the pain came back in full force. can't find anyway to be comfortable.... tired of spending hours upon hours in bed or on the couch

Hey Ron.
Sorry to hear about your accident. I used to roadrace in the 90's and slid down the road a time or two. If its anything like any tumble that I took, the crash was the easy part. Living with the consequences is the hard part. It sucks, but you are in good shape and young so you'll be fine. I know that icing at the end of each day sped things up a bit. Don't push too hard too early when recovering.
Question for yas: how long did it take to get you from the scene to a hospital?
Get well soon Ron,
Mike

I had a friend in LA that also broke his leg during a similar race. He said that wouldn't stop him and it didn't. Soon after the cast came off, he was going at it again….and broke the same leg again on, I believe, the second race. He must now wear a leg brace to walk…..

Sorry this happened to you Ron….I hope at least you wait until your leg is "completely" healed before you risk your only body again ;).

Ron,
I feel your pain. I have 2 herniated disks 1 of them ruptured. I've been taking percocet and motrin.
No position seems comfortable and I'm not sleeping well.

I recently aquired a 1988 Cagiva WMX250. Too bad I can't ride it :)

I wish you a speedy recovery.

Find a way to hang yourself upside down by the ankles, increase time as confortable . . .
It will relief and help healing, we should do that often as well as walking backward, to shift polarity.

Inversion definitely helps, but it always made me nauseated.

I have found that you can accomplish exactly the same thing (and maybe better) upright by supporting your body weight from your shoulders. It's a bit awkward, but I suspended myself by putting my arms through an old deflated innertube. The weight of your legs can then decompress your spine. I should build a proper frame and patent this, it works fabulously.

I rode down to georgia friday morning with a friend ( 50 yr old buddy of mine that had drove down to my place from his place in roanoke virgina thursday night )

We got there around 1pm. We got unpacked and unloaded and geared up by 2. We rode till about 3 and came back to the cabin so some of the other guys ( we had a group of 4 older guys and 2 kids ) could get a drink and take a break (
it was very very hot friday! )

We geared back up to ride around 4, and while we were getting ready, a few of us rode out onto a endurocross track that was right in front of our cabin. endurocross courses are gnarly.... your riding over rocks, logs, truck tires, hopping up short but steep jumps, riding over large diameter pipes, etc.... So anyway, my virginia buddy hits the course as I ride back to the cabin to round up everyone so we can ride out onto the trails. Get everyone together and we can't find my friend. I finally spotted him on the ground next to his laid over bike behind one of the short little jumps. Apparently he rolled off the jump the wrong way and his front wheel dropped so low, he got flung off the bike over the bars..... he thought he had broken his collarbone. He was in intense pain and wasn't going to ride anymore.

We spent another 30 minutes getting the parks medical staff over and staying with him while they put a sling on him and iced up his shoulder. He refused a ambulance and didn't want to go to a hosiptal... he insisted that I go back out and ride, since the park closed to riding in only a hour or so. I told him that when I got back I would load us up and just take us home that night.

We then of course I ended up on the MX track just before making it back to the cabin, and broke my leg. We weren't sure I broke it. Was thinking I might have just severely jammed it..... eitherway I couldn't walk, could barely stand. My accident happened around 6 pm.

The rest of the guys loaded my friends and my bikes on the trailer and loaded all our stuff back into my car. They backed the car up and got it as close to the chair I had been sitting in since I got off the bike. They picked me up and helped me get into the car and believe it or not, I drove us home. wasnt painful at all to sit in the car and work the gas pedal.... had to use my left foot to hit the brake though. Got home at about 1am saturday morning.

My buddy got up at about 6am, and another friend of mine came over and unloaded our bikes and stuff our of the car and loaded up his stuff so he could drive back to virginia.

I spent most of the day just sitting on the couch trying to decide to go to urgent care for a xray or waiting to see if it would get better. my girlfriend pressured me into going ahead to check it out, so we went to a few places till we found a urgent care that didn't have a 3 + hour wait to be seen.

They xrayed me and it was obvious I had broke off about a third of the bone at the top of my tibila right under my knee, right leg. they gave me a brace and a prescription for some meds and made a appointment for a specialist to see me on monday and sent me home. So I spent saturday night and all day and night sunday on the couch with my leg elevated with ice packs on it.

Monday the doctor looked at it and decided to do surgery. I got checked in at around 11am and they took me into the OR around 2pm. whatever they use to knock you out... it was instant, was completely zoonked out and didn't wake up till almost 5pm. By then I was in a recovery room and was all bandaged up and had the brace back on.

Went home about a hour later and been here since. a friend loaned me some crutchs and I have gotten around the house to eat or use the bathroom etc....

Even with the pain pills it still hurts like crazy and I am generally just bored.

Luckily, a few friends stepped up to mow my yards this week and did my normal 5 day route in 3 days, finishing up late yesterday afternoon. So I just sit here till next week.

I have a appointment next monday with the doctor to look at things again, maybe remove the stitches.... got more friends to help with work again next week.

All in all I should be okay, just hurting like crazy and bored and probably be broke by the time everything is all over.

My take on this is that Ron deserves exaclty what he got. judging from the scene in the video where the guy cut him off as Ron was turning base I noticed that he was operating a LTL machine with no HS or rudder....Knowing what caliber of a man Ron is he should have know better!! once your machine was airborn and lacking these key features to remain stable did you really expect to come down nice and straight?? It's guys like this that bring a bad name to the sport.:boink:

Week Later Update......

X ray looked great, bone still in place, and whatever else doctor looks at must have looked good to doctor.

Pain is less. Pain in knee and area around break is more uncomfortable pressure than outright pain, but swelling in my leg below the knee and my foot is somewhat painful.

I feel like a one legged dog.... can't do anything much productive from the crutches. I have mowed a few yards, using the crutches to carefully get up onto my sitdown mower and mowing slow and carefully, but I cant do anything else, I need help getting in and out of my truck and so on. Miserable feeling when you can't even do basic stuff.

Few more weeks and I should be on my feet again. Can't wait to get in the gyro for a flight.

Got to say thank you big time to Jake and Mark Greene. Both took it upon themselves to send me a little gift to help out while I am out of commission. I so appreciate it guys.... I am scared of how broke I will be after this is all said and done, not to mention got a divorce looming in about 3 months. Anyway, just want you two to know that your gift will be a big help for me. Thank you so much.

Ron,

Sorry to hear you're having to go through this. I wouldn't wish it on anybody.

I hope the healing keeps going as well as it has so far.

Hello Ron,

get well soon. And try to take it slowly. Like all self employed businessmen you have a killer for boss :boink:. Try not to succumb and let it heal properly.

Kai.

Ron,
I feel your pain. I have 2 herniated disks 1 of them ruptured. I've been taking percocet and motrin.
No position seems comfortable and I'm not sleeping well.

I read an article that hanging by your armpits right-side up works just as well as from the feet….tried to find it but can't now. If I recall properly, they used an intertube suspended by a rope. Don't wrap it around your neck ;).

Hang in there, Ron. We're all thinking of you up here in Ohio, and we hope you heal up real quick.

Best wishes,
Ed Newbold

My computer is messed up... posting from my phone. Leg hurts, im bored, and this is going to be a long recovery
