Actually, there's going to be one, Chapter 73 will have involvement, but it's not a PRA event.
McMinnville Municipal Airport in Oregon, southwest of Portland, Fri/Sat/Sun, August 18/19/20. We're being given our own area at an existing major fly-in put on by the Northwest Antique Aircraft Association. Last year, there were 700 airplanes flown in just on Saturday.
It's a huge place, and camping is available. We won't have the freedoms to do aerobatics in the pattern like happens at some gyro-only fly-ins, but the airport remains open for all but three hours of the event, so we can take off and have some fun over nearby rural areas almost anytime.
Across the street from the airport is the Evergreen Aviation Museum, where they have the Spruce Goose on permanent display, and also an SR-71 Blackbird.
There are at least two nearby airports, perfect distances for fun cross-country flights, with restaurants on the field. Independence State Airport is a residential airpark 19.8 nm away, and Annie's serves breakfast and lunch. McNary Field is a small Class-D field, 18 nm away at Salem, the state capital, and the
Flight Deck Restaurant has great food for breakfast, lunch and dinner, 7am to 10pm.
The valley is peppered with small airports, so it wouldn't take too much to set up a poker run or other kind of rally. We could find someplace nearby to do bomb drop or spot-landing competitions, etc. The mountain views are breathtaking. Historically, McMinnville gets rain on an average of something like two days per year during August.
We won't be able to "own" this event, but it will be a fantastic opportunity to let a few thousand fixed-wing pilots see gyroplanes fly, ask questions, and take home cards or brochures. It's hard to imagine a better opportunity to have fun and spread the word!
