Was just wondering, have any of you Southern California flyboys flown over Glamis during a big weekend? I see paramotors, military jets, WW II aircraft, private aircraft, Etc fly out there, but I have yet to see a gyrocopter or gyroplane fly by. If you've never seen Glamis on a big weekend, you won't understand what I'm about to explain. The crowds at Glamis are massive, and I mean MASSIVE. There are, literally, millions of dollars worth of toys out there on a big weekend. Comp Hill at night looks like a huge Christmas light parade. I was thinking, maybe if a couple of us did some flybys and recorded some videos on a big weekend during the day, of course, it might spark some interest in gyrocopters/gyroplanes again. What do you guys think? Also, not sure of the legality of this, but might be worth looking into.

I would LOVE to do a low level fly through the dunes when it is calm and EMPTY.
That would make for some wonderful video.

If you do that with the big crowds present, and don't maintain your 500' minimums, you are going to get A LOT of attention.
(Not the good kind)

I don't fly near that area, but it would be fun. Most of the OHV activity is concentrated in a few areas. Watch the airspace down there - it is surrounded by restricted R-2512 and R -2507S (which almost touches Glammis proper), and the MOA are very active there. I did some drone work on the dunes and there were constant low flying helos and V22 Ospreys to avoid.

I know it's impossible on a gyro, but I've seen some paramotor videos of guys that would drop down and join into a dune ride with some buggies and ATV's. It was pretty crazy.

That would have been Brad Roper and his crew on Facebook I’d imagine.

I’ve found that people tend to be more forgiving with infractions on paramotors and they are easy to fly VERY low and very slow. My theory is that paramotors are seen as bicycles or mopeds of the sky so no one really cares or sees them as “proper” aircraft- just dudes with fans on their butts.

Not sure how it works with gyros especially if you can be tracked and have much higher speeds. In theory you can just fly very very low but whether you’ll get in trouble really depends on if anyone sees you and if they do whether they’d bother or want to report you.

2 Examples of how low and slow you can go from a little while back for me:
With regards to crowds, most people will probably think your flying is awesome and most likely be totally fine with it but a few might be shitty about it - you never know.

I typically avoid crowds for two reasons , one stated just above and the other is that I tend to get tempted to show off and do more risky shit which I shouldn’t. At some point pushing the envelope catches up to you. I’ve got a family now so really should avoid that kind of temptation 😁

I think two or three open cockpit Mad Max/ James Bond type Gyros flying in formation 500 ft off the ground over the Glamis Store, Flagpole, Swing Set, or Oldsmobile Hill, would be one hell of a sight to see. No fancy aerobatics or anything other than a flyby would be needed to make a huge impression on people. I bet there would be a huge number of TikTok videos suddenly popping up, generated from that one flyby. Not just at Glamis though, events like Burning Man, and Wasteland Weekend would be great events to make a showing at to promote gyrocopters/gyroplanes.

If you can do it without getting in trouble I’d love to see your videos from that!! 😎😁

👆 See? He would. Hey, that gives me an idea. Maybe I should start a members only YouTube page and make people sign up for a membership to watch the videos of me going to jail. Then I can use the money to bail me out. Hehehe😉

Burning Man is the complete opposite of a sparsely populated area during the event, so 500 feet won't do. 91.119 (b) will require at least 1000, and subsection (a) probably more than that so you can deadstick without risk to the crowd if necessary.

They also pop up a controlled airspace during the event.
