Fireman's Revenge

Notice how they busted out BOTH windows, when they could have done one, and then opened the door? When I was a policeman, I have broken out car windows of cars parked infront of fire hydrants at fire scenes also.....One time it was a new Mercedes. You have to really beat hard on a MBZ windows , because they are made extra thick. When the fire was out, we put a ticket on the car for parking infront of a fire hydrant, and then towed it away(you never know if another fire could start in the same area again, right?). My sargeant just about crapped when the owner called complaining about his car. I told him what I did later; then he thought about it, smiled, then said he didn't think the guy would make the same mistake in the future.......

I haven't had an opportunity yet....but I wouldn't hesitate for a second ;)

Same here Todd, it's one of those things I have in the hope to do list.

Scott not only is Mercedes glass tough, so is their steel. We had one donated for an extrication class, and it was the only car our cutters had a tough time going through. Even an old Caddy couldn't match it.

Do any of you use the spring loaded glass punches? I've seen videos of them in use and they seem to work pretty good.

I carried the spring loaded ale at work for years. I learned about it in an extraction class in 1977 and found I liked it. It really does work and needs no effort. Just push the ale against the window and wait. In a moment the window shatters.

They work really well, if you happen to remember its in your pocket. I carried one for awhile but haven't seen it in a few years. They definately work well.

That method of getting to the hydrant has been a standard procedure in Chicago since I was a little kid.

In Addison, Texas: The fire department responded to a very serious natural gas leak under the pavement. While awaiting the local utility company, the pumper engine hooked a supply line to a fire hydrant. From the hydrant the line was laid out over the curb in an arc out to the lane divider, swept back over the curb and curved back to the hook up on the engine. They hadn't charged the line when a young lady in her new Beemer wanted to turn and drive across the empty supply line. A police officer on the scene directing traffic told her that she could not cross that line and that if she did she would issued a ticket. Momentarily diverted the officer turned away, the young lady crept around the corner and over the line...at which time the firemen charged the line. Now there was an 8 inch obstacle in her way....she was trapped. She started honking her horn and hurling epithets and invectives at all gathered there. The kindly police officer promptly issued her a citation with the following warning, "Here's your ticket. DO NOT CROSS THAT HOSE or I will put you in jail! DO NOT ABANDON your car here or I will have it towed! You WILL sit there until the fire department disconnects that hose and rolls it up!...Have a good evening ma'am!"

Lesson learned, three hours later she got to drive away.

When I was a firefighter in the Air Force, we responded to a fire in base housing and a nice new(at the time) Honda Accord was parked in front of a hydrant. The assistant cheif told the rescue truck to pull up behind it and push it out of the way. You could hear popping and grinding as it was being pushed, probably busted up the auto tranny pretty good, not to mention the back of the car where the taillights and trunk lid comes down got all banged up. I never saw the owner cuz I was busy fighting the orange dragon, but I imagine he wasn't happy... TOO BAD!

At the base I was at over in Germany people would park their cars in some of the parking lots while they went back to the States on vacation. Sometimes they'd be gone for 30 days. If the base wanted the parking lot cleared out for some reason they'd post a sign for a few days and then after that they'd bring in a front-end loader with forklift forks and just pick up the cars and move them. Not sure how much damage it would do to the cars but I'm sure it must have done some.
