As a science nut, one of my interests are volcanoes.

For years I have been following the discovery and mapping of the YellowStone Super Volcano and it's history of eruptions.

Scary, even if it is on a geologic time scale.

Connie and I have even camped out on active volcano under the steam clouds of Mt. Baker so I am not that much of a worry wart..

But Super Volcanoes can wipe out most of a continent.

The idea of finding more, even if dormant gives me a sense of both wonder and doom....

.

I've flown inside volcanos before.
But that was before I figured out what a colossally stupid idea that was.
But it was interesting.

Flew into an old blown out volcano crater just to the west of of Gypsum Colorado in an OH-6 once and landed in the bottom. Density altitude was such that I had to make the other guy get out and climb up the side.

Bet he loved you for that.:)

Tim Kenya was a very volcanic area with many volcano craters, one still active just across the border in Tanzania. https://www.volcanodiscovery.com/lengai.html
Ol Doinyo Lengai, is the only active volcano known to erupt carbonatite lava, a discovery made in the 1960s. Often flew past in charter with tourists and sometimes hop over the top to let them watch it bubble and smoke.

Longanot was a large crater that figured in 'Out of Africa' and some of the most beautiful flying sequences over where I used to fly. Music was pretty good too. One guy in a Bonanza flew in there and then crashed against the crater wall.

My dream now is to go back in a gyro and explore at leisure low and slow all those places I flew over high and in a hurry just getting from A to B as quick as possible, trying to make a living and pay the bills.

With quite a few family in the US I do cast a thought to the overdue Yellowstone giant from time to time.

I would LOVE to do some volcano flying in a gyro!

Mountain flying is still out of reach for me.

On our vacation we flew in a vintage piper around the cascades but it was with the curator of an aviation museum that has mountain experience.

I still have not been to yellowstone in person. I hope to get there.
