Which courses and altitudes are appropriate for VFR aircraft operating more than 3,000 feet AGL, but below 18,000 feet MSL?

A) True course 0 degrees to 179 degrees inclusive, odd thousands plus 500 feet.
B) Magnetic course 0 degrees to 179 degrees inclusive, even thousands plus 500 feet.
C) Magnetic course 180 degrees to 359 degrees inclusive, even thousands plus 500 feet.

Bonus: Please give the regulation number

I get confused with this all the time. I think I remember from my instruction... East is least, West is best.... Meaning if your flying East it is odd plus 500 altitudes, flying west it is Even plus 500.

C. I believe this rules apply to magnetic courses, not true courses. Otherwise you have to be continuously figuring variance and deviation to determine what altitude you need to be at.

C here.

C here.

I think it is C.

3000' is not where most gyros fly anyway. But a good rule to remember anyway.

I kind of agree Jonathan above. You need to remember the magnetic course part but I have a memory aid picked up over the years. It's two Swedish guys, NEODD and SWEVEN. North and all of East, ODD thousands plus 500 feet. South and all of West, EVEN plus 500 feet. 14 CFR 91.159

Ron,
Not to jump all over you but you REALLY should know this one. Lots's of Chris's questions are not scenarios you encounter often but how do you fly your RV without knowing this?

West is best and east is least is usually taught for adding or subtracting magentic variation or deviaton when converting from True to Magnetic to Compass for courses. (Add for west deiation or variation ie best = higher number and subtract east= lower number).

The way I rember the navigation one is it is 0-179 degrees. 179 is an odd number so that is the odd side.

Hey Rob. These quiz questions have been great. Everyone though I was dumb, now I have proven it!!!!!!

Paul,

I am really glad Chris is doing these because few gyro pilots get adequate ground schooling. It is just not pracitical for instructors like you and Chris to spend enough non-paid time on ground instruction. Plus we ALL need regular reviews.
