Hi

Another large batch of gyro and light helicopter cancellations in the US&A over the past fortnight - all these were counter balanced by one new build gyro ( first Apollo AG-1 in US ) - a couple of well known names in among these machines, Marion, Dennis................

Steve, I doubt it. The FAA now cancels registrations if the owners do not renew periodically, a measure instituted a couple years ago to cleanse the database of aircraft which no longer exist. These cancellations are probably mostly for failure to renew. In particular, one of the machines listed is the gyro destroyed when Bill Parsons had his fatal accident in Florida in 1997.

But some of the many Bensens on the list may still be in barn rafters somewhere!

... where they don't contribute to the accident rate or tempt people to teach themselves to fly.

Well...since no attempt is made by the FAA to accurately determine the hours flown by general aviation aircraft, the number of registrations sometimes is used as the denominator in accident-rate discussions. In that sense, an N-numbered Bensen banished to the rafters but still in the database actually helps the accident rate!

The FAA is purging their records. Some of the gyros were probably sold and somehow certified as a new build by the Repairman Certificate seeking new owner.

I can attest to the fate of two of the gyros listed:

N125CM was an N number owned by Calumet Motorsports and to be assigned to our next Exciter kit. The company was sold and the N number never used.

N802GS was actually an Air Command. I went along on the delivery of this aircraft to a customer in Canada.
