I made my monthly trip to the PRA73 meeting in Scappoose, from Lenhardt (near Hubbard)...Ory-gun. The weather was a challenge this time. There was only a 30% chance of rain, but my machine got a washing.

For some pics:

First pic: Instead of heading directly to Scappoose (north), I wanted to deviate to the northwest and get some pictures of my house. So I headed toward Newberg (right where a shower is hovering).

Second pic: The Portland Rose festival had these jets scheduled to fly by during a parade, so they were buzzing around the valley waiting for their time window.

Third pic: I deviated to the west of this shower enroute to the 1500 ft hill behind it.

First pic: Flew over the Willamette River near Newberg. This is a little island I like to canoe around.

Second pic: Just cresting the hill to the north of Newberg enroute to my house. There are lots of inhospitable trees around here.

Third pic: A shot of my property, with my wife on the back steps waving and my German Shepard in the backyard. The white in the fields are daisys. Next week I get to rent a tractor and mow my field.

First pic: I had to hurry with my picture taking around the house because a big shower was starting to move across my intended flight path (on the left side of the pic.)

Second pic: After passing by that big shower, there were lots of little showers around the area to avoid too.

Third pic: This is near Cornelius Pass, over trees. I am aiming for the lighter spot to the right of the picture, to avoid the heavier shower which is directly in my path to Scappoose airport.

First pic: Taken at 11:21, I was sitting on nice dry pavement, making an adjustement to my anti-servo trim tab.

Second pic: Taken at 11:26, a heavy shower moved through and completely soaked the area. These two guys were getting ready to do some practice in the Sport Copter 2-place when the shower hit. They abandoned their flight. It had me worried about getting back home again. My gyro is parked in the background and got soaked. (on the outside only) :D

First pic: at about 1:00 I checked the NexRad radar while at Sport Copter and saw a window of opportunity to squeeze between a couple major lines of showers. Here is shortly after takeoff, heading south towards Cornelius Pass.

Second pic: You can see the pass just a little past the river (Actually the Scappoose channel). That big cloud over the pass tried to suck me up into it.

Third pic: I'm just about to go over the pass (all trees). Off in the distance is a shower (to the right of my flight path) that is making its way directly into my flight path. I tried to hurry it along.

Fourth pic: Good shot of GPS showing me crossing Scappoose channel.

First pic: Another shot of the shower that I am racing. It was trying to push me east into the Portland airspace, so I kept trying to outrace it.

Second pic: I got hammered by the leading edge of that shower as I passed over the concrete jungle of Beaverton.

First pic: After passing by that shower I had clear sailing the rest of the way. Most of the showers had passed to the east, so the ground below was wet. This shot shows the place where I work, in Wilsonville (Mentor Graphics).

Second pic: This is the I-5 bridge that passes over the Willamette River just south of Wilsonville.

I had another minor adventure after these pictures, when a Maule passed close by me on my left. But it turned out ok, landed ok (despite tricky winds), and was glad to be back home. I didn't need to clean the bugs off the blades this time. The rain did a pretty good job.

Hi Gary.

Wow! That first shot in your third post is DRAMATIC! Really gave me a new appreciation for the awesome beauty (and fury) weather can be when viewed from the air. Nice photos all around. Thanks for posting these.

Gary; Approx. how many degrees deflection do you have on your anti-servo?
I put in about another 2 degrees on mine a couple weeks ago and didn't eyeball it...for total deflection now. Thanks.

.

Good question Harry. I just know that on the flight to Scappoose I needed to keep my foot on the left rudder. On the trip home it was ok. I'll try to measure it next time I'm out there.

Very cool. 028 is my favorite.

Gary: Beautiful patchwork quilt terrain you fly over. Way to cool..
