That is a nice easy set up, plus you do not have to manufacture any parts.
The shock that I have used, I have had to make spacers, and other adapter parts.
The rod ends are nice since they take up the misalignment the dominator has, and the rubber is not weathering and cracking.

Thanks Guys. This has given me a lot to think about. I like the idea of the rod ends. Edypaul welded his rod ends onto the ends of his shocks, I'm wondering if there were any heat issues on the shocks when welding

Don't know about the welding, don't want the oil to boil inside the shock...


The other nice thing about a setup like this is you can change out the springs without a press, or spring compressor.


Now where is the link to figure out HOW to calculate the correct spring?
You know, gear length, pivot point, angle of shock etc. Not just for a dominator.

Paddy, I see that QA1 sells quite a few different female rod ends that could screw onto the threaded shock end, but the trouble with the Volks shock you don't have much adjustment in the spring, also you can't replace the spring if it's not the correct rate. With the QA1 you have the ability to adjust the tension on the spring for the load or change the spring if needed. Even though the QA1 are quite a bit more expensive, IMO, that's the way to go.

Thanks Jay, Joe Pirez and Ed managed to change their springs on the vw shocks, so with the ebay springs it might work. With anything bought from the States, the killer for me is the shipping, customs here add 21% to the toal of the invoice cost plus the shipping...

Hi, I am considering fitting an aux fuel tank on my Dominator. Joe did you have the tanks made up. What wall thickness are they and does the bottom one fill from the seat tank.

Ed made the tanks, I do not know the thickness I will tell him to look in on the thread. Yes the bottom tank and the seat are plumbed together.

The last enhancement was an auxiliary gas tank. I am referring to the one on the bottom. 7 Gallons is just not enough time for any kind of cross country. With the additional tank we have between 10 and 11 gallons. The small tank above holds another 1.7 gallons but is not usually required for our daily flying.

Hi Paddy, I have an extremely simple re-design of the dominator cyclic assembly which eliminates nearly all backlash. The main issue with the stock assembly is it relies on <0.200" of surface area per pivot which is 1/8" 4130 plate on an AN-4 or G8 bolt. My design uses 1.177" of surface area per pivot with 17-4 SS sleeved bolts in DU bushings, delrin thrust washers and delrin thrust buttons.

These are GBB brand DU type, they refer to them as "Metal-Polymer Anti-Friction Plain Bearings".
06DU08 and 16DU16 is what I use in the assy pictured in my last post. The thrust buttons and washers are delrin.

They are also described as steel backed teflon impregnated sintered bronze bushings, not to be confused with std sintered bronze bushings which need lubrication otherwise they tend to gall.

Schaffler as well as oilite have a similar bearing of the same construction, these are intended to run dry. Be careful as Oilite is a brand however many folks tend to refer to all oil impregnated sintered bronze bushings as "oilite" bushings, just as DU is a Garlock brand and DU is often used to describe all bearings of the same type. Yes this can be confusing!

Well as long as you know the specs and maintain them
I have had very bad luck with the standard sintered bronze bushings. They disintegrate.
But it sounds like your all over it.
