Hey all from Benson Days '23.
I'm at about 6 hrs training,of which 3 have been with Steve McGowen ( I hear he is the BEST ) well speaking of HEARING, it is damned hard for me to hear what he is telling me as #1 I have been around jet aircraft ( X USAF jet tech ) AND #2 motorcycles most of my 67 years on this space ship AND #3 Steve's instructor supplied head set/ helmet don't fit well on my head or ears ( he is working on that issue )....soo I'm calling out for help on finding a solution .My idea is to #1) buy a combo helmet / headset ( anyone want to sell me for my 6 7/8 size head ?) OR #2) borrow a head set while here at Wachula....I REALLY like my motorcycle helmets and I'm seeing in the ear speaker / boom's for sale on ebay - anyone recommend brand ? Thanks in advance .The BEST way to help me with this issue is to CALL me 864-324-2210 .

Have you tried one of the excellent noise cancelling headsets? I'm extremely pleased with my Zulu 3.

So far I've gotten by with my Bose in the M16s I've spent the most time in, but am looking for something for my Gyro Technic when it's ready to fly this Spring. Denis, the designer of the GT, uses the Flycomm integrated helmet and seems to like it. I'll be trying it out before I decide on what to buy.
You definitely want something that allows you to hear your instructor while learning to fly.

I've used Halo under my full-face race helmet and it worked great.

I used those for a year or so at the airline, but they didn't hold up too well to frequent use. I even purchased a second as a backup and had issues with that not long after putting it into service. They may be fine or occasional use.

After visiting Denis when I picked up my Razor Blades several years ago I got the Flycom. Had a problem with mic level while flying with my CFI. I took the electronic module out, replaced the mic element and very happy with the helmet now. Looking back if both occupants in a 2 place machine use a Flycom probably not an issue.

Many believe the Flycom helmet (integrated sound) from UK is the best...
So that's what I bought. I'm quite happy with it - only it seems to fog up.

My instructor bought a Microavionices helmet. It's cheaper, and is called a copy of the Flycom.
And he says the Flycom is better, noise and quality wise. My MTO has a lot of engine noise in the backseat.

I've heard reports of mic impedance issues with those, something about differing standards between the UK and US? How big a deal was it fixing the mic problem?

Flycom has GA and UL mikes - not identical. Also a choice of Auto Gyro (Binder) or GA plugs..
If you tell them of your need, they'll supply the correct impedance mike capsule.
It's an expensive helmet, but like you US guys say: If you got a $5 head, buy a $5 bucket...

It was pretty straightforward. I'll post a photo later today. Was not an impedance issue from what I could tell. More a mic gain/bias issue between the Flycom and the other mic in the aircraft. The Flycom was also an electret.

A couple of us have put noise cancelling headsets (Lightspeed and David Clark so far) into the Sky Cowboy helmets (https://www.skycowboysupplyco.com/product-page/scsc-pilot-helmet-package-without-headset.) The big thing is that the helmet is size adjustable, so always fits the passenger when you're flying Young Eagles.

A leather sock (https://www.lightspeedaviation.com/product/leather-mic-boot/) over the microphone seems to help with wind noise.
Corey Kirkwood had one of those outfitted with a Bose. It was pretty nice and he was happy with it. I kinda like the full face shield option with the Flycom for the wide open cockpits.

Flycomm with DC boom and mic.

Mic options are listed in the specs, low and hi impedance versions.
