Regardless of the contests, it should be noted that with competitive people bad things can happen. I'm all in favor of contests but I think the organizers have to set guide lines on who they are going let participate. If Charlie were still with us I can guarantee there would be strict guidelines.
The contests at Waxahachie included a time of flight tri-angular course with takeoff distance factored in. I thought this was one of the most exciting contests I've been witness too. However, the entrants were limited to the 'professionals' more or less or at the very least those with a lot of experience. Even at that Ken Rehler, who was probably the least experienced of the group, lost a prerotator on takeoff and almost had an incident. The pylon race at Mentone last year also limited contestants.
